How'd the compression test read?

Haven't performed a compression test because it runs fine with no missing or anything wrong just wont idle I have done some reading and I am going to check the EFI fuse and the wires leading to the ECM. Those both seem to be problem areas for causing issues with these 4runners and trucks with the 22re. Once again thanks for everyone's help I will keep everyone posted after today when I find some time to mess with it.

That's same way my Camaro did ... i could start it and as long as I gave it a little gas it would run... just wouldn't idle... did compression check and cylinder 7 was bad. tore it down and it had broke a ring. Not saying 100% that this is your problem, but it's something to check. Also the intake gaskets will cause idling issues if there's a leak with them.

The only thing making me think that it isn't a compression problem is that when I had the cylinder head off the cylinder walls didn't have any damage done to them from broken rings? Something like that would be pretty visible wouldn't it? I haven't had the time to work on it for a week or more I've been busy with finishing up my last semester of college and working full time hoping to get it all figured out I would like to get it back on the road and take the top off on these nice days.

did you look for a ridge at the top of the cylinders? I would do a leakdown test vs a compression test, the leakdown will identify ring vs valve issues.

What about a warped intake manifold?

Yeah a leakdown may be easier for him.... Definitely need to do one or the other IMO though. I mentioned the intake gaskets earlier too. When you do the leakdown you might actually be able to hear Hissing sounds and pinpoint where you are leaking. And you can actually open the oil filler cap and listen there and that would basically tell you if a ring is bad (that's the first place I'd check). If it was running and you had alot of air coming out of the oil filler cap, I'd be thinking rings anyways. If it's good there you can check the exhaust, intake, etc..... Some soapy water or even a thin piece of paper might be handy as well if you can't pinpoint the leak around the manifold.

Have you go through the basic idle checks? Check the throttle body for a throttle plate closing off too far. Check the base idle screw to make sure it was not adjusted too low, check the IAC system to make sure there is nothing wrong with it...

No updates decided to give it up for a while and needed a new vehicle fast so I bought a 3rd gen 2002 4runner about a month ago. I'm moving the 1st gen to my shop tomorrow and hopefully soon enough I will be able to go back to work on it.
