4Runners underpowered?

Well, I decided to give my SIL's 4Runner a tuneup yesterday...she left it next to the shop while taking our 08 Wrangler Sahara to bluegrass fiddle camp...

It is a 1990 bought very used, put plugs, cap and rotor on and the motor sounds nice, and rev's good with no misses, just a little backfire from the front of the muffler. but no power down low, compared to the stump puller of my '11 Taco with 3.73 gears. I guess the old engine and the 31" tires or the blown muffler doesn't help either, but I had to go to 3k rpm to climb a decent grade...

Do I need to keep looking for other engine faults as I go or is this level of power normal.

3k climbing does not sound like much at all to me

It also depends on what motor is in it. Does it have the 3.slow? If so, then that is normal.

Depends, if it has the 3.0 then it's normal.

If it has the 22RE then i'd say you're going pretty good!

gotcha...I guess my tune up work is done then...now to get a muffler put on, and wait for the SIL to collect.

you are correct sister-in-law...I have $40 in tune up parts, $20 in oil change materials into this job, plus watching her dog for the week pays a bottle of decent rye.
