Mom has a 2007 Toyota 4-Runner, however, she is having problems trying to get the rear hatch to open. When you go "click" or "unlock" it nothing happens.

any idea what this could be?

    Thanks!

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
    Check fuses.

Ended up replacing the actuator?? Its the part that is on the actual gate itself and has the mechanism which locks into the part down at the bottom..we bought it from a small local dealer who replaced the part. However, even after having replaced the part, the gate still won't open...they said it needs to go to toyota for it be reprogrammed? Does that sound legit?

There is a post somewhere online regarding reprogramming. Its like unhook the battery and power cycle the windows and door locks. It does work but temporary. My wife has this same issue. It comes and goes.
