i hate to do this...

I have been looking at Tacomas but i recently started looking at 4runners and figured out that they have the same drive train right? That is the 3rd gen 4runners with the 1st gen tacos. Im basically going toyota for a dependable truck. Looking for v6 auto 2wd and i noticed a big price difference between the tacoma and 4runner. I guess my question is are they the same drive train and are they just as dependable? i found this one near me, i think the price is high can someone or anyone advise? Any input would be great thanks guys.

If it helps, I just bought a 98 limited 4X4 with 110K miles for $5600. KBB valued mine at about $6K and so does my bank.

yes, 1st gen tacos and 3rd gen 4runners are the ones with the same components and such. As far as price goes, that 2wd is in really nice shape but I don't think it's worth $6500. Like stated above, you can find a 4wd in the same shape with same mileage for same price if not cheaper. Prices of course vary state to state but in most cases they're around the same price range. Just depends if you find someone who truly knows what they have or not. If you have a loving Toyota owner who maintains their vehicle and babies it ,of course they'll always think their vehicle is worth more that what it really is. Keep shopping, you'll find a good deal. Watch out for Northern ones, frame rust can be just as bad on the 3rd gens as it was on the 1st gen tacos.

i got my 98 sr5 4x4 4runner last year with 138k on the clock for $4k in pretty good but not perfect shape. super reliable and really same as the tacoma. id say you should be able to get it cheaper... for 2wd auto though. havent had really any problems that i didnt induce in the water/mud. i trust it just like i have all my other toyota trucks

Yes they are the same power train. I bought my 1997 4runner sr5 2wd v6 in October of 2012 for $3900 on craigslist with 184000 miles. It was in nice shape and has 191500 on it now and I've had very little trouble at all I love it it's been off road with my buddies in there 4wds and it keeps up gust fine! I love mine I wanted a tacoma but went with my 4runner because of the price difference and I'm glad I did! I love the 4runners
