Need Help with Tread Depth

Found a set of 4 Toyo A/T Open Country 265/75/16 for sale for $125/set on CL. The seller sent me some extra pics and he says he thinks they have about 25-50% tread left. I attached a couple pics to see what everyone else thought about the tires, as I think it would be a good deal if around 50% left. I do have aftermarket 16" rims already on the truck and will be adding the Fat Bob's lift.

 

That looks to be correct. keep in mind when you buy tires worn like this they tend to be loud going down the road.

 

Save your money. Those tires don't have too many miles left on them. You'll be buying tires again in no time.

Those are an awesome tire when brand new though.

 

those tires like they will go 15k more...toyos go forever. Get a pic with a penny in there to get an accurate reading on a pic.

For 125bucks, can't go wrong!

I would jump on it.... Toyo's are great! I bought 31x10.5x15 tires from used tire place in December, mounted and balanced for $200, they had about 40-60% tread left, so far they are great, well way better than the stock Dunlop Grandcraps...

 

my only problem with these tires are "safety". sure they may be able to go for a few thousand more miles, but can they do it safely? They will most likely handle like crap both on road and off road. Tire shops may not even mount those tires for you because of how worn down they are.

 

Inspect them carefully for damage, inside and out.

 

^This. And sometimes damage doesn't become apparent until you mount and inflate the tire, then you discover bulges on the sidewall.

As for tread depth, it depends on your definition of "acceptable" performance. According to TireRack's tests in 2007, wet stopping distances doubled with 2/32" tread depth versus new, due to hydroplaning, while dry traction wasn't affected much.

I'd say they have about closer to 20 percent than 50 on tread wear, but for 125 bucks, what do you expect lol.

 

Get a tread depth gauge and measure them. Compare that with how much depth they have new.

 

I live in AZ so we have about 95% dry weather...lol

 

Definitely going to pass. Hearing about the stopping distance increase doesn't sit well in the Seattle area. Haha. Thanks for all the information.
