MPG help

Ok so I just made the trip from south Texas to southern California in our 2011 access cab 5 lug. I averaged around 21.5 mpgs on flats and 18-19 on the hilly areas. I am running 235/75r15s, a fat bobs lift and around 500lbs total weight including passengers. Does this seem about right? Is there anything else I could do to increase my mpgs for the trip back? I was averaging around 70-75 mph. Also how's everybody else's tacomas done on long trips?

 

I don't know what else you could do but I was reading some stuff on the Lexus forums and some of the folks there talk about weapon-x (?) CAI and a Sun hyper voltage add on. One guy claimed it did a world of difference on his RX 330...anybody here got any experience with these products?

 

Get a cheap light tonneau cover.

 

I average 19.7 combined hwy. I stay at 70mph. No matter what I do with speed I get 19.7.
Running 31x10.50-15 tires aired to 28psi. Could probably get better MPG if I aired up but I want even wear on the tires.

 

Yep tires and lift are killing you, higher rolling resistance and wind resistance.

My stock I4 stick will get 27+ at 75 and 30+ at 65.

Are you factoring that the bigger tires have thrown off your odometer by about 7-8% so your 21.5 is really 23 mpg?

Try jacking the tires up to 44 psi. I've run max pressure for 15+ year with excellent life and without the uneven wear that others warn about.

 

Ya tires and lift kill MPG. My 19.7 is with the 11% difference the bigger tires have in revs per mile over stock. Also have done secondary filter mod.

 

21 to 24 is the range I usually get on the highway if I set the cruise at 74 on the speedo (70 according to the gps). I have found wind plays a huge role. I ran the same 300 mile round trip 10 times this spring, same driving habits but varying results.

 

I didn't acount for the odo being off from the bigger tires, so I guess I didnt do to bad.

 

Thanks for all th input. So I made the trip back to Texas last week. I actually went back loaded down to th max with furniture from the in laws an probably had a total weight including me and my wife of around 750lbs. I'm not sure if it's because the engine is breaking in more or the fact that I maintained between 65-70mph but this time back I averaged 24.7. I'm pretty happy wih that considering the load on the truck and I had a little bit of a lead foot on the hills.
