5 lug rotors

Hello all. Have not been on in a while but I went to get my oil changed this weekend and the dealer told me not only do I need new front pads my rotors have a really bad rust ring around the top. They said the rotors should be replaced because the rust is doing some serious damage to the rotors and can not be resurfaced.

Has anyone had this problem on there Tacoma? Mine is a 2006 with 51K miles on it. It has lived in NJ the entire time so it sees some nasty winters. I was pretty pissed when he told me about the problem considering I bought the truck a year and a half ago certified pre-owned.

They priced it out at about $600 for rotors and pad replacement. I may just go about the install myself since I have done a rotor change before. Anyone know where and what kind of rotors are good?

If you're getting new brakes check out the site and then call Edwin. I'm running the SP slotted rotors and pads. Pretty happy with them.

 

i always buy the toyota pads and rotors and install myself. all the aftermarket stuff ive tried only lasts maybe 6 months and squeak like a mofo

 

I'm pretty easy on my brakes and the SP stuff has lasted over a year without any squeaks or other issues. I think when in doubt OEM is the safest bet.

Yeah, I wonder about the dealer telling him that they can't be resurfaced. Seems like they could be if the rust isn't too bad, but IDK.

 

dealerships are known for doing that shit. they just want him to give them 600 for brakes and rotors when both front and rear cost less than half of that plus install. which he could do in a few hours. thats why i only do the work on my truck cuz i dont trust them or anyone else for that matter

 

I paid $10 per rotor and use oem brake pads from dealer. Work just fine. All rotors usually get rusty on the inside of the vanes anyways.

 

exactly haha and the rotors usually last a long time so i doubt they are done

 

Yeah I did 4 vented and slotted with new pads for like 700 on my old rx-8. They were great and did the install myself. The dealer was more worried about the rust inside then on the rotor surface.

 

And thanks for the links to parts. Keep them coming I'm upset about the OEM quality if this sh!t happens I would like to upgrade anyway if I'm changing stuff.

 

I thought you were just talking about that rust around the top... but the shit on the actual friction surface is unnatural...

 

Man, those rotors are toast! I have a 5 lug and just plan on getting new rotors with pads when the time comes, rotors are $100 all day long. Yours look really bad, I can see why the dealer doesn't want to touch them. What they want to charge you is bullsh!t, brake shops are a big rip. Do it yourself, this cheap shit but screw what Toyota wants.

It sat for like 2 weeks last spring when I had an issue with my new short shifter but thats the longest it has ever sat

 

anyone have upgraded rotors on here? Drilled or slotted?

 

going to just get some Centric premium replacement rotors and get new EBC green stuff pads all under $200.

 

My sp performance rotors are slotted. I wouldn't get drilled, either plain or slotted only.

 

definitely slotted the drilled seem to warp fast. or at least on my truck lol

 

ugh autoanything/ebc sent me the wrong pads. Now I'm waiting even longer to replace these...
