UCA pivot bolt question

I am trying to install some custom fabbed UCA's and the stock pivot bolt going thru the bushngs is not long enough.

I know it's a 14mm, but, does anyone know if ones off a Tundra or Land Cruiser are any longer than the Tacoma ones? I did call the local dealer and they don't have any in stock to compare it to.

The best I have been able to come up with is some threaded rod from Fastenal and use lock nuts on both ends?

From the pictures I am assuming I don't have enough thread to be safe? Perhaps get rid of the flange nut and just go with a regular lock nut?

 

What would be an alternative solution? As far as I can search no one carries a 14mm bolt that long? Unless a Tundra or Land Cruiser bolt is 14mm and slightly longer?

 

And I just got off the phone with McMaster Carr and they have threaded rod in Grade 8. Isn't that the same as most suspension fasteners?

That's only the equivalent of Grade 5, and I believe for suspension stuff should be using at least grade 8 or higher.

Sorry, didn't notice the grade 5 at the bottom. I looked and saw the 8.8 above it.

 

Loads on the UCA aren't that high, actually. Grade 5 will work, but you can't torque it to OEM specs. The Fastenal bolt has a plain finish, though, which will cause the bolt to rust out within one winter in Chicago.

Do the outboard bushing flanges need to be that thick?

Since the bolt is in shear, another solution is to use a jam nut. Only 7mm thick:

I was actually thinking about the jam nut. But, never thought about shaving off some of the flange on the bushing, there is plenty of meat on it.

 

why dont you just order the oem bolt?

 

That's what I have in there and it's not long enough. The way these were fabbed, the made the pivot housing extra wide.

 

oh, gotcha..that's weird. Are they TC UCA?

You can call them and if they don't have a long enough bolt in stock they can order you one. I've bought many bolts from them
