Sub/Amp shut off after hard hit

When my sub hit's too hard, it will quit running, not sure if it's the amp or the sub that stops, but if I turn everything off and back on it will play again. I've got 8 gauge wire running to a 500 watt peak amp, at 1 ohm dual voice coil Alpine 10 inch type R. My assumption is that I need to get 4 gauge wire to fix the issue, agree? Disagree? Thoughts?

 

Is the amp stable at 1ohm?

 

This was happin with me I forgot what the wire was called but it's hook up to the wire when you turn your key it turn the power on to the amp usually this gets loose and makes your amp not work

 

is hard to say without knowing amp specs and how you have the dual voice coils wired to the amp, but my guess is that the amp is going into protection mode on hard hits and when you turn off and back on, it resets itself. A 1 ohm load is pretty low for the average amp and if it can handle it, then it probably does need 4 gauge running to it.

 

Agree but make sure the sub is wired correctly first.

This is my amp... thought the spec sheet said 500x1ohm... but on here it says 2... that's gotta be the problem, I may wire it back to 4.

Take it back to 4 that amp is not 1 ohm stable. If you don't know how to wire it like that I'll post a link up in a minute.

 

I'm familiar with how to wire into 4, sucks that I'm going to lose the extra wattage though.

 

I think the problem is solved in this thread.... however for any that may read this in the future....another possibility can be low battery voltage because many 'smart' amps shut down at a certain voltage. Cranking it up high and shutting off always told me my battery was dying.

 

I have never tried this, but have heard of guys only connecting one of the voice coils in a dual sub. One of the downsides I have heard is that it cuts the power handling ability of the sub in half.

 

Two voice coils running at 350 watts will sound better than one running at 500, but that is an option I haven't thought about yet...

I would still wire up both of the coils. You don't need as much power as you think you do.

 

Perfect excuse to buy another one.
