CB keeps blowing fuses. HELP!

Dont know where to put this because there is no eletrical section
So i picked up a uniden CB(same internals as a cobra 29) and I did this.

the cb i bought came with a cigarette lighter and i plugged into it after i finished and it worked. I then tried to hard wire it to the battery and i ,fixed up the positive and negative leads the first time and blew the fuse. I then replaced the fuse and double checked the leads and still kept blowing fuses. 5 fuses later and still blowing fuses. No shorts(triple checked that) and no clue what is wrong.
Anyone help?

 

If you are blowing a fuse, you have a short. Time to bust out the multimeter and track it down.

What size fuse are you using ? And how did you wire it to the battery ?

I thought so too so i pulled all the wire from the grommet in the fire wall and checked all the wiring for signs of scrapes holes etc, then went straight to the battery over my hood. Maybe inside the CB somewhere?
and the fuse with the CB didnt say how big it was so i started with 15 then 20. Just two crimp connections straight to the battery. One on positive one on negative.

And i guess if this helps the fuse blows immediately

 

So your drawing power directly from the battery? Have you considered drawing power from a fuse inside the cab under your dash on the drivers side?

 

I think i am going to try and reconnect from the ciggarette lighter and then if that works ill move onto a fuse in the cab. I just need to find one that is always hot

 

I just helped a friend out install a CB radio in his 07 tacoma. We drew power from the fuse panel like this.

EDIT:I used the horn fuse since it always had power going through it.

 

yeah thats what i was planning on doing. Just hope that fizes the problem

An easy mistake is getting the two wires + - crossed. This will connect the wire from the positive battery directly to ground.

15 and 20 amp fuses are way oversized for a CB.

 

On the plus side, if he uses a large enough fuse, he will find the short where the smoke is.

 

yeah realized that went to 4 amps.
UPDATE: so i went back and just hooked it to the original ciggarete lighter and now that is blowing fuses too

 

I bet you accidentally reversed the wires earlier and blew the zener (polarity reversal) diode.

If you know how to use a multimeter you can open the case yourself and see. Otherwise, you gotta take it to a CB shop.

 

yeah i just looked and the diodes were split in half
so anyone know where i can buy these? radio shack?

hell yeah! so after messing with it i finally got it to work. was the polarity diode. This is why i love this website so much help!

 

so now that everything is working I cant receive anything. only transmit
