Weathertech headlight guards

Anyone ever heard or tried the weathertech headlight covers, the clear ones?

 

Are you talking about the clear film? If so, yes I have heard of them, but I have never used them.

I imagine they would work, but keeping them clear/clean for very long may be tough.

Yea, well itd be easier to just take them off after 5 years then replacing the whole headlight

 

If they would actually last five years without yellowing or getting dirty, then they are definitely a good buy. That's my only concern.

installed on my wife's Accord and my Taco.
The Accord was easy to put on because it was 2 pieces per headlight on mostly flat surfaces.

On the Taco it's only 1 piece per headlight and it was a pita to get the curved corners to stay down. Had to really heat up the corners then apply pressure to keep them down and keep pressure on until they cooled off. At first I just used my hands but then couldn't stand the heat anymore so I switched to a rag. Corners still came up. Tried reheating and pushing down again a few days later but apparently the glue had already washed off the raised section so wouldn't stick down.

I'm thinking user error so didn't whine to anyone. I'll just live with it for now.

ETA: The Accord has had them since 09 and still look good.

 

I have WeatherTech Headlight and Fog Light protection on both my 2010 Tacoma and 2000 Solara.
The Solara's are more than 10 yrs old and look like new. Clear with no yellowing at all.
I had a similar issue with the Tacoma that kprstaco had (above).
The Passenger's side took forever with a little lifted spot about the size of kprstaco's smallest (Picture above, similar to the one by the hood/fender separation)
I agree, user error.
The Driver's side, done days later, took no time and came out perfect.
The fog's have some small bubbles, but not worth mentioning.
The large pieces like the Tacoma's are difficult to install, but can be done perfectly.
Takes persistence and the right conditions. Sun, Heatgun, etc.
Without Plastic headlight lenses behind them, they will withstand a 1" rock @ 100mph.
It's obvious what would happen with plastic behind, though.
But my objective was, no pitting or dings. That has been successful.
Both vehicles headlights and fogs are like new.
The WeatherTech's can also be removed, but not reapplied.
Fog in pic below is not a smooth lens, it's sorta corrugated so the WeatherTech couldn't adhere to the whole surface.
No diminished light as a result

This is the bad install, the flaw is in the same location as kprstaco's, near the hood/fender separation, but barely noticeable in this photo

I had them on my 05 wrx, and had a similiar issue with the rounded parts. What I did was make a small cut so I could shape the guard the way I wanted it. Worked out pretty well. Only we you could tell I had them on was because of an air bubble I never completely got out. I plan on getting some for my headlights. Either that, or getting some rejex polish and putting that on it.

 

Bumping an old thread here for a question.

i put these on and my headlights and foglights get pretty warm to the touch now. I didn't pay attention to how warm they get before I put them on. Has anyone who put these on had any issues with melting lenses or bulbs burning out prematurely because of temp buildup?

 

After how long of running the lights? My headlights will get a bit toasty after being on for a good drive.

 

This is after a 15-20 minute trip or so. They don't burn my hand, or melt the lamp guards. My main concern was them melting the actual lense, or making the bulbs burn out all the time.

 

I've had the Xpel head light and fog light film on my truck since 07...still looks new. The film is thick and a challange to get installed. One thing that helped alot is leaving some of the paper backing on the last corner of film to be applied and pull the film as you use a heat gun to mold it around the outside corners of the headlights. The stuff is tough...should take a pretty good rock hit with no damage.

FYI, my drivers side one is doing the exact same thing in the exact same spots. Gonna probably just cut those small sections out when I get home, since they wont really affect performance.

 

I have had mine on the Taco for about a year......still look new.

To avoid the bonding issues.....I trimmed mine to just cover my head lights. I trimmed them at the line between the turn signal portion and the HL. Can't tell that they aren't covering everything.

The turnsignals are at more of an angle to the oncoming bugs / debris......I don't expect ( or care ) about this area as much as the headlight area.

Much easier to install to the HL only areas.

 

Sounds like overall ok experiences, I think I'm gonna try them since I don't want to replace these brand new hid projectors anytime soon.
