    Your fireplace looks great!
I built a BBQ fire pit 8 years ago. I used almost the same techniques you employed. Congrats!

This year I decided to add a natural stone patio and a stone planter.

    Before:

    Gathering stones (again):

Moving right along (a few weeks into it)

Poured a concrete foundation for the planter to sit on:

    And...Done!

Now I just have to fill the planter with soil and plant some flowers. Eventually grass will grow between the stones. This will define the rocks and give it a more 'natural' look at the same time.

I asked a few people how many rocks they thought were in the patio, 2 of them said 30 and one said 40. Correct answer: 105!!

I'm really pleased with how it came out though, it is just what the fireplace needed to make it look like it belongs there.

What a neat outdoor spot to sit and read or just unwind.

I did a similar stone path in my yard this year. Unfortunately for me "gathering" stones means buying them at the rock yard. Talked to several people about how much I would need. Loaded the Tacoma so it was riding on the suspension stops, listened to the wife go on about how I got WAY too much rock. Then when I got rolling realized I was a couple hundred pounds short and had to go back for more a few days later...

    Looks great. Nice work.

You should upload some pics, I'd like to see how it came out.

Here's the planter with a new tenant.
