I have a 89 extra cab(3/4 ton) with the 3.0 AT. It has about 190,000 on it and it gets 26mpg HWY and 22mpg in town. Before I got my 09 Taco it was used to pull my Harley in a 10ft Cargo trailer. I have never had any problems with the truck.

I appreciate it guys. This is going to be a fun project for me. It will be my FIRST project also.
With that being said, I am up to any info and comments.... I know what motor I got so I don't need a 3.slow comment. I am 22yrs old, have a family, and on a budget. I pay for EVERYTHING my self and don't ask for help.
0psi, when I do the swap, I will keep you in mind. unless you wanna go ahead and just sell me your runner! lol jk
detnight. Idk what kinda mileage this thing will get. I have had it for several months and just put 100 miles on it! lol Those miles are from driving it everytime I replaced something!

The 3.0 came out in 1988. I read somewhere that the first couple years of production had asbestos headgaskets, and that the problems started when that product was legislated out of the gaskets. If I am not mistaken, the whole "service campaign" that Toyota had on the 3.0 didn't apply to all years.

Flat bed her up man. Flatbed 5th gen pickups are mint.

If you plan on keeping the 3.Slow for any length of time then I would suggest doing the head gasket before she blows, put some ARP head studs in there, and rebuild the criminal crossover pipe. Block off the DVR side manifold and build a "Y" pipe so that the cylinder banks are dumping into seperate outlets. Bit of work, but way cheaper then going the 3.4 route.

I don't exactly like the power that the 3VZ-E produces, but they are actually a fairly good engine when running right. They have excellent trail manors, and will roast tires if you gear them right... :D The 4.56 rear end will be your best friend. My only real gripes are the crossover pipe dumping #5 cylinder gases right at the #6 cylinder as #6 is on its exhaust stroke. That is what kill the head gasket.

If you can drive stick then I would consider putting the R150F transmission and VF1A Tcase into your truck instead of the A340H which uses an integrated Tcase. Or if you wanted to keep it auto you can use a AW4 jeep transmission, swap the bellhousing and then you have the option of using an external Tcase. (the A340 and AW4 are the same internally)

If you want to go the 5VZ-FE route then remember, if done right it will cost you at least 3000. Getting someone else to do it will cost signifigently more.

Other then that I am sure you will enjoy many years of faithful service from you '89. I really wish that my '94 wasn't so bloody rotten. However, yotatech.com and will be your best friends from now on out.

The head was actually rebuilt less than 15k miles ago. I hope I am good on that for a good bit. I can drive a stick, that's what my DD is. What would be the cost for swapping it over to a 5spd? What would be the cost for doing what is in bold? If i do swap to a 5spd can I keep the current Tcase and save for a different one or would it be better to go ahead and replace the Tcase as well? Can I get a standard transmission from a 1st gen Taco?

The transmission you are looking for is a R150F transmission. The output shaft on the Tacoma is slightly longer then the transmission in the 5th Gen pickups. The other main difference is the transfer case on the Tacoma is a DVR side drop, and the 5th gen is a PASS side drop. You will not be able to use the transfer case in on the automatic truck. The auto transmission is intergrated with the transfer case, the R150F transmission and the VF1A transfer case are seperate units. You should be able to find the transmission and transfer case for around 5-900 depending on mileage and condition. Pedal, master and slave cylinders, flywheel, clutch and anything misc stuff I can't think of right now will run you around 1000 for new stuff. Clutch alone is going to cost 300 minimum. If you offroad a lot it will be worth the money to swap it. If you don't it's pretty much a nil point.

As for building a Y pipe, it depends on your welding skills. The DVR side manifold has 2 ports. One port is the exit for both cylinder banks and the other port is the port that dumps the exhaust down towards the cat ect. You need to cut the crossover pipe, and angle the pipe to be dumping exhaust down towards the pipe and not into the manifold. Then you need to block off the crossover pipe port on the manifold. Then you need to build a Y pipe that will connect to the crossover and the stock manifold. If you can weld it will take a few hours, some prefab exhaust kits, cutting discs ect. If you cannot weld then its going to cost a fair amount of money to get a shop to modify the truck for you.

I can weld, certified in stick and mig, that wouldn't be the problem. I guess I will have to get someone to show me what YOU are talking about when, and if I get ready to do it.
I am thinking about selling it and my DD to get an 01 Runner... Not sure though

If you want a play toy and project truck, then no! I have enjoyed working on mine A LOT! I would have prefered a 5 spd over my auto, but couldnt beat the price that I paid for it. Make sure that the head gaskets have been replaced recently. If not, that would be the first thing that I would do. IF you got the 3.0l.
