You had definitely best love it, because there is very little money in being a sponsored climber. That being said, most of the sponsored guys I've met aren't concerned about that in the least.

Damn that's a lot of gear! Climbing gear's so expensive...
So's offroading stuff, for that matter.

It's expensive on the front end, but remember the hard goods last essentially forever. Your only continuing costs are a new rope every couple years, new slings every 5 or so years, shoes, and reslinging your cams every 5 to 10.

Also, when you start to get into big wall climbing, that's when the gear whoring really starts. My main climbing partner has about the same amount of gear I do. We combined our racks for some of the walls we did in Yosemite last June. Rough count was about 200 carabiners, doubles to quadruples on all cam sizes, 3 ropes plus the zip line, 40+ slings, and of course everyone's personal gear, camp gear, the haul bags, portaledge, etc.

Flying all that stuff out there was probably the biggest challenge of the trip. We're hoping to get back there either 2013 or 2014 for another go round.

That is true, it's essentially all upfront cost. Just gotta keep that in mind when I end up getting a rack.

    Damn, you guys are intense!

I worked it in with a lot of other stuff, especially my time in AZ (I was there for 8 weeks as a grad stundent doing a clinical affiliation at a hospital in Prescott). I mostly climbed on the east coast until I finished grad school, then started traveling more. So far have climbed in NC, WV, AZ, WY, CA, NV and counting.

Taking some time off from climbing trips this year to finish the truck. Still climbing plenty on the east coast, but getting back to long-distance trips is gonna have to wait until next year. All my plane ticket money became mod money.

I'm trying to get more into climbing because I want to focus more on Adventure Photography. I recently purchased about $3k worth of climbing gear on Craigslist for $750! A total steal! I can only climb about a 5.8 but I love to rappel into a good spot for photography. I'll be going to Joshua Tree in Sept or Oct to do another shoot. Check out some of my work and let me know what you guys think.

If any of that used stuff was soft goods (slings, cam slings, ropes, etc.) get it replaced. You don't know the history of it, and used soft goods can be a deathtrap without any detectable signs.

Hard goods are easier to judge...if they look good and work correctly, they're fine.

    Be wary fellow climbers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e2AINr0kJE

My professor was teaching about golden eagles and told the class about this vid. He also climbs and said he stays far away from any climbing when golden eagles are near. Apparently their talons can puncture a lung, too, so you don't want to be grabbed even if you are clipped in.

Sport climber here. Been doing it for almost five years. I'm in Jacksonville, so I'm usually in the gym, but in the spring and fall season, I head up to Foster Falls, Rumbling Bald and other sweet crags in the Carolinas.

So I'm now seriously considering buying trad gear. What is a good set of nuts or cams (don't really care which, I can use both) should I go with to start?

I have zero experience with trad gear, however a guy i'm friends with at my local outdoor store has a full trad rack. Next time i'm in there i'll ask him and see what he recommends.
