just curious because I'm in the market for a kayak but obviously want to know that i can carry it before i buy it, would you say the OEM rack is strong enough for a kayak? if you do carry a kayak, how do you secure it? what would you say is the best way? I'm also looking at crossbar pads that velcro over the rails, will these work on our bars or are they for more circular style crossbars?

My 10' old town fits nicely on the oem rack.

looks good man thanks for the response, you just used ratchet straps and tied em down to the tie hooks on the rack?

Yeah pretty much. I made a 100 mile trip like that with no problems. Stopped once to check my straps and they were all good. But I am looking to pick up some "J styled" carriers so I can carry multiple kayaks more securely.

Also, if you look closely at the pix, GA_TACO4x4 has secondary tie downs front and back. That way you are not just depending on your roof rack. A yak airborne at interstate speeds is not something I ever want to see in my rearview.

^ yeah I forgot to mention those. I see ppl use those all the time so I figured it may be necessary.

Prudent at the very least if you're going to be traveling at speed.

True I did notice that, but good eye for pointing it out, I'll definitely be securing them like that as well

Yes....I did it for a little while but then attached a Yakima rail grab system to it. It worked fine with my 12' Perception Pescador sit on top.

    Go for it.
