Found a 2010 Tacoma Access Cab 2.7 4cyl 5sp. It looks clean but I haven't had a chance to go look at it though. It has the sr5 pkg and oem alloy wheels. They are asking $22k with 28k miles. I could possibly get this dealer to go down to 21k or maybe even $20,800.
Could this possibly be a steal or should I just stick with my plan and by a brand new taco in January when my financials are in perfect order? Thanks guys!

I bought mine new for about $25k.
I used $0.10/mile depreciation value when I was calculating value on used Tacomas since I figured the new one was $25k and it would go at least 250k miles.

That truck is right in line with my theoretical depreciation curve, so it is a good deal. It is not new, but you are getting no real advantage over buying new.

The big advantage may come with the options you will have with financing on a new vehicle and the peace of mind that comes from buying new.

That's not a bad deal, but myself I'd buy new with the 2.7 5spd so there's lots of warranty time to complain if it has a Luk clutch in it.

On the flip side I haven't seen a whole lot of 4 cyl's with the best SR5 package. Dealer inventory here always seems to go 5 lug > base 4 cyl > TRD Sport.

I love the look of the 2012s though. Im going to try and talk him down to 20500. i think i have a good chance of that since I work at the auction he buys most of his cars from.

For what it's worth, I bought pretty much the same truck you describe, a 2010 4cyl, 5-sp SR5 Access cab used from a dealer. I bought in mid-2010, and got it with only 5k miles on it. The original buyer didn't like the way it pulled his boat, so he came back and traded up to a Tundra. Anyway, if you are dealing with a Toyota dealer, like I did, I got the Certified Pre-Owned warranty with mine, and it is significantly better than the new truck warranty. The Certified Pre-Owned warranty is good for 100k miles or 7 years from initial registration in my case still good till October 2016.

I added the Extang Tri-Fold, and the dirt road dust:

If you are asking me, the windshield price was $23,997 on May 25, 2010. Mine was a local Toyota dealer, and I traded a 96 4Runner with 250k miles on it that I had bought there 14 years earlier. So, it is impossible to sort out if I was able to negotiate a better price on the Tacoma, or a better trade price on the 4Runner. Paperwork showed the list price at $23997 then netted out the trade.

FWIW, mine has an OEM hitch, but was not technically the "Towing Package". I added a simple trailer light connection from e-Trailer for about $14.

Around here (Boston) my truck listed used is sometimes more then I paid for it new for some reason. I paid 22,500 and I see them listed between 21 and 23 with more miles on them. Mine has 26k on the clock.:D

Test drove it, its great except I found that the left apron was replaced and the A-pillar was repaired. Still has a clean carfax though. The dealer said he would sell it for break even at $19,800.
So with that and it needing new tires is this still a good deal? It books for 23,250

Used Tacoma's really hold their resell value, at least up Northeast where I'm from. With this in mind, I'd just buy new in Jan as you were planning. You'll get a brand new truck that, providing you hang onto to, will hold its value over time.

In 2005 I bought my Taco brand new, and got a little raped by the dealer in the process. Almost two years after I've paid it off the Kelly Blue Book value on it is $11,000 - $14,000 (Trade In - Private Seller). All things considered, that's a hell of an investment. Plus the truck still runs good and everything works.

Used is nice if you want to get more vehicle for your money, by buying something that's a few years old. If that isn't an issue, I always buy new. If you keep the vehicle for at least 6 years it's a good move financially. Of course if you trade in every 2 or 3 years not so much.

I just wish it wasnt repaired, but then I guess they wouldn't have knocked off 3 grand. I will talk to the manager on Tuesday and see if they can go even lower. But then again if I bought new I would be paying 5k+ more, thats alot of money for something just a little bit newer.

...and something that has never been in an accident.

Besides any time you buy used you'll never know how the original owner treated it. Was the truck pampered, or run hard? Was it washed only by mother nature (rain) or did it get regular detailing? Did the original owner get things fixed when something went bad, or just ignore the problem? Wouldn't you also want something with a full manufacturer warranty?

Sorry but if you're agonizing over a few months, and $5,000, I'd really just wait. In this economy buying used isn't as good of a deal as most people think, remember my 7+ year old Taco is still worth over $11,000. If you have the money, and patience, NEW is the way to go.
