Figured I'd post up some pictures of commercial fishing, and Kodiak Island, AK up on TW. Hopefully there might be some interest, any questions are welcome.

The fishing industry rarely gets any attention in the media - aside from "Deadliest Catch"...

Bare with me - got about 1,000 pictures from this summer to edit and post...eventually.

Thread's been a little stagnant lately - been busy working on the boat.

Been using my Taco pretty hard the last couple of days...

Here's a shot of a load of Halibut Longline gear down to the boat. Hoping we'll be leaving on our first trip by next week.

We longline, trawl and tender for Salmon.

For fun, or for a job? Silvers are just starting to run out here. Maybe I'll take the truck out this weekend and get some salmon pictures.

For a job. He was up there like two months. He told me what kind of boat it was and everything but to be honest I don't remember. Like 40' or something.

New show coming out on NatGeo Wild about commercial salmon fishermen in AK that should be pretty cool. They're 40' boats, though, fishing in the Cook Inlet. Great photos, Jake! Definitely a tough, but rewarding, job!

All everyone hears is how much money is in fishing. Rarely do they hear about the seasons a boat barely makes enough to pay the bills. Or the number of fishermen lost at sea (while not a fisherman, one of my ex co-workers is somewhere in the Bearing Sea-all they found of the boat was the fridge door and they only knew where it came from because it was unique).

Anyway, it's an interesting way of life. I wouldn't mind hearing more about.

And a picture which I think is a tender.

Aw, hell, my boat started going under water due to the weight of the catch and the bow catching waves which forced it under water. Never want to go through that again. In mere seconds you could go overboard in AK and be swept away for good by the current - no joke. Am floored that we (me) rarely thinks about how some food is sourced and what workers must go through to put something like a fish on our plates. Be safe, up there, Jake.
