Took mine in for the "free" oil change about a week or two after having my aftermarket wheels and tires put on. Told the service tech repeatedly that I didn't need the tires rotated. He even told me they don't touch aftermarket wheels. So he even wrote in large letters on the service order not to rotate. Forgot to remove the spline key from my console which was buried under a bunch of stuff where it couldn't be seen.

Got in my truck to leave and you guessed it, the spline key was laying in my cup holder. I thought maybe they found it before they realized and didn't do anything. WRONG! Hit the interstate and the truck rode like shit. I don't know if they rebalanced or if just moving the tires around caused it but it wobbled like crazy. Rode fine before hand.

I just took it back to Discount Tire and explained what happened and they rebalanced and no more wobble.

A few of you guys seem to be confused. The drive wheels always wear out quicker then the non drive wheels. So on a rear drive vehicle the rear tires wear out quicker then the front and visa versa.
As a technician, if your rear tires on your Tacoma have more tread I would of left them where they are or I would of rotated them side to side. What I mean is switch the left tires with the right tires, providing that the front tires are worn correctly and not going to cause a pull to the left or right when swapped.

As for Toyota not telling you that they didn't rotate your tires, it may of been the technician who forgot to tell the service manager that he didn't rotate the tires. So next time you go in there, don't be pissed off at the service manager and blaming him.

the bold would only be correct on a front wheel drive vehicle.

The front tires ALWAYS wear quicker than the rear.

@sporttracguy: Check each tire's tread depth yourself and see if there's even any truth to what they are saying.

No they don't. The driving wheels always wear quicker then the rear. I have done countless oil changes on ram trucks and Piece of Mind maintenance which is an oil change, rotate, complete check over. On both jobs I measure tread depths and the drive wheels always wear quicker.

Interestingly, sporttracguy's dealer didn't replacing the drain plug crush washer either.

My dealer replaces the crush washer with each visit (and charges me an extra $1.40 for it). They also write the tread depth into the invoice.

If you look at a set of tires that aren't rotated for long periods on a REAR wheel drive vehicle you will see the front tires wear at the outer edges.
The rear tires wear in the center.

I worked as an auto tech for 10 years before I moved on, we would always keep the tires w/ the best tread in the rear of rear wheel drive. The oopposite is true for FRONT wheel drive.

On trucks with 390 hp, I could believe that. Especially since in said application they're putting heavy loads in the back, pulling trailers, etc. It would be the hardest working axle. However I can personally guarantee that my fronts wear faster because I don't romp it much. After all you can't get 22+ mpg in a six speed flying around like Jeff Gordon all day. My rears have about 1/32" more tread depth than the fronts and they went onto the truck at the same time 17k miles ago. So, not always.

The best argument for putting the the better tires on the rear is for icy conditions. If the good tires are on the front, when brakes are applied the rears with less traction will lock up first; this will cause a nearly uncontrollable spin as the rear tires can no longer keep the momentum of the car from pushing past the braking front axle. Super extreme snap oversteer. A lot of people with front wheel drive cars think it's better to put good tires on the front so they don't 'get stuck'; then in the first snowstorm they truly do get stuck when they go straight into the ditch at 40 mph.

not going to debate it with you.

lets just say...when you were born, I had already owned 15 cars/trucks...and every one including full size Chevy & Ford trucks & vans...and even a couple Corvettes...the fronts ALWAYS wore quicker than the rears.

and my last truck (2010 Tacoma) the dunlaps in front were toast after 25K miles and the rears were decent enough that I moved them to the front for safety & handling purposes just prior to trading for the 2012.

maybe it's a characteristic of Ram trucks...but in my 35+ years of ownership the only vehicle where the rear wore quicker than the front was on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Everybody that owns a set of Craftsman wretches knows more then the guy that has a tool box and tools the cost more than the first guys truck did.

I'm amazed at the amount of misinformation I've read on this forum in the 3 days I've belonged to it.

    SNIP.

You have 2 guys that are current or or former auto techs telling you the same thing.

You want to bitch and moan about how the dealer is screwing you, go on.
You want me to believe you know more about cars and trucks because you own one, than the guy that sees 10-15 cars a day---sure I believe you.

    I'm done---you win.
