Yeah yeah yeah I know it already exists for the New Dodge's (I think) but I thought about doing this awhile back and just recently found a sweet deal on ebay.

So what If i got the backup sensor system and put 2 on each side of my taco, then got them wired to the turn signals. Everytime the turn signal goes on, the sensors go on to! If someone is on my side BEEP BEEP

Whatchya think? Pro's, Con's, Balloons, Cookies?

Sounds like a good idea. I would be interested in seeing it done. Where would you put the sensors?

Why not have the sensors on 24/7, use a light int he mirror like the escalades or whatever? Install them to the dimmer circuit so the light is dimmer at night. I've considered this option as well. Doesn't seem hard to do, just never pursued it.

24/7? Not a bad idea. Buuutt would you really want to hear a beep...beep...beep.beep beepbeepbeepbeep..beep....beep.....beep........

everytime you passed someone or you were going through say, a drive-through?

I like the dimmer idea..You mean like all 4 sensors register on the mirror so you know where it's coming from?

Forgot to answer this one. Honestly I don't know, but for a mod like this I wouldn't feel to bad about getting a few holes preofessionally cut.
That's last resort though, Ideally, I would like to make/find some kind of module or housing that could be mounted to the side of the frame.

    IDEALLY...

Im trying to think of idea's to compensate for sliders, steps, and if the buyer had niether, maybe something that won't get knocked off by rocks.

Those sensors are ultrasonic... not sure how well they'd work while at speed.

Also, they aren't going to warn you of someone attempting to pass that you may not see, such as a motorcycle. It would be way too easy and tempting to begin to rely on the sensors rather than the shoulder check, just like in the 70s we relied on our Wink mirrors.

That's a VERY good point. Not only would they possibly not work at that much of a distance, but, people might get reliant on them.

That second risk is not something I feel discouraged by to not keep pursuing it though. The system will be to assist someone who turns it on and doesn't even notice that another car is there.

I don't get mad at toyota for not making my truck come with extra mirrors because I don't feel like moving an extra couple inches to look over my shoulder.

    Thanks for the info, Rich

not bad man, it would be too easy to put an LED behind the glass or beneath the mirror, pointed at the driver.

Custom fab would even be a big plus.

Ya, my main concern is that it may not work properly.
Not sure about now, but the original parking assist and blind spot/following distance sensors back in that 90s used "Rashid" radar, which of course is impervious to moving air and has a pretty good range.

Ultrasonic ranging can be pretty "iffy" when you don't have a flat reflector... I got more than a few out of focus photos from my old Polaroid that used an ultrasonic range finder when shooting a smaller item that was much closer than the background.

But it would certainly be an interesting experiment to set up a temporary mount on the corner of the bumper. I'd definitely be interested in the results. Connecting it to the turn signal is an awesome idea.

Im gonna look into this more, try and find out what different types of sensors there are. That would be a good start.
