    Is this normal? I used to think someone was messing with my tailgate leaving it semi unlocked (like when you close the car door half way). Last night I go to close it and I found out it was the latches that weren't locking. I can pull it and it will get loose. :mad: I don't open and close it all the time either. hell I BARELY put anything in the bed, when I do, it's not often.

    this is what I am referring to (I don't have the bear claw latch though lol).

    I pulled off the tailgate last night and a little while ago I tried to move the inside part to see if it locks, and it doesn't really move much. looks like it's VERY rusted. I haven't tried the other side though.

    Check the Latches, clean if necessary, then hit them with some lube. Maybe just binding up being dirty or a lack of grease :cool:

    tested both sides and it's just one side that won't lock. :( anyone know where to get a replacement besides heading out to the dealership?

    lol it's called the Bear Claw latch or something. I just did a Google image search of car door latches to get a reference image to what I was talking about so that no one would think it's the handle, which I find odd that the handle showed up as the latch.

    If you say you hardly use your tailgate- take off the back panel and see everything is hooked up? Its seems it should not be worn, but it could be defective? Were the latches clean or? Any rust on latches?

    Your current latch may still be salvageable. I agree w/ PSJ, scrub it up with a pipecleaner to get all the dirt out and then hit it with some lube/wd40 to loosen it up.

    I took it apart right now, and found the culprit. it's was a small pebble (strangely it's one of them little rocks that look all crystal like... not sure if that makes sense) that got lodged into the latch itself!! :eek: how it got in there is a puzzle to me, but it was inside where the lock is for the latch, it was preventing the lock to snap back like it's supposed to. I poked it out and now going to clean the latches. Both of them look old, some rust on the latches but they still work. Just have to clean them like you said. Thanks guys. :cool:
