Warn M12000

I just picked up a used Warn M12000 and tore into it today, for the most part it was pretty clean, gears look good and the grease was still decent. Problem is water got in the motor and started to rust, not too bad, doesn't look like its very pitted, it still runs but don't know if I should get a new motor or just clean it up and seal it.

 

Anyone?

 

how much is a motor? it looks like you will be able to clean up the commutator with some scotch brite, then lightly scuff the brushes, and clean up off the rest, give it a light coat of oil and slap it back together?

also, how are the ball bearings?

 

The ones i've found are about$ 250.

The bearings are fine, most of the rust is on the housing and the paper backing on the copper electrodes(not sure what the hell they're called), a bit on the spiny part lol some on the center shaft. I'm mechanically inclined but never really messed with motors.

What looks like happened is that water got inside and sat on the bottom causing the housing to rust and as it evaporated slight rust formed elsewhere.

The three parts that really matter are the bearings, the commutator and the brushes. The pics you have, I would take some scotch brite, or a very fine sand paper and clean the commutator (the copper stripes on one end of the part that spins, (aka armature.) Don't get too aggressive, and you want to do is clean them up while removing as little material as possible.
Then make sure that the ends of the brushes that contact the armature are clean and not glazes over too bad.

Then last, make sure the bearing run smooth.
