How I removed my swaybar.

I wanted to remove my sway bar. First I dissconnect them at their 2 outer most points. (17mm) I used a socket to break them then you need an allen to hold backup and a wrench to remove. I could only find my 5.5mm allen. It worked fine.


Once that was done I couldn't find a way that satisfied me to zip tie it up safely. So I removed the skid plate Front is 12mm rear is 13mm I have the bolts from Toytec's drop kit. Then tried to wrestle the sway bar out. Got fed up and losened the brackets that hold the skid plate.

Once loosened I moved them to the center to make and X

Then the sway bar came out. Instead of reinstalling the bolts and skid I removed everything and placed aside. This is just to see if it is something I would want to do. If I like the ride I'll put it all back together without the sway bar. I'll report on ride quality later today.

Don't forget to tie back these little guys before riding. Maybe its okay to let them hang, I tied mine back.

 

I bet it drives horrrible? My friend did that to his jeep, and every little turn, it felt like it was about to flip over!

But there are some benifits while off roading with disconnects

 

I have never heard it driving horrible in fact it feels alot better to the driver,

 

Aight I'm back from a little test drive.
I can definately feel the difference and there are both positive and negative differences.

Negatives:
* Lots of Body roll on "S" curve, I was driving aggressively.
* We have very bad roads here; When there are a lot of black top patches to back the truck wanders on the road. This is at speeds over 45mph.

Positives:
* Feels like an older model truck.
* I put it through some woops and dips, in the field. I like the way it felt, not sure what but it felt good as in solid. My truck normally wabled here.
* Now for those black top patches; when they are single or spread out the truck handles those great, very comfortably.

Still haven't decided what I was gonna do. I have the TC UCA's coming in on monday and was wondering if it was worth putting the Swaybar back or if it would hinder the new uca. I mean to use it to its full potential. I also wouldn't feel comfortable unhooking the swaybar each time I offroaded because it would just be loose. And competley removing it could be annoying but not time consuming. We'll see. I'll leave it off until I need to go back under the truck for the UCA's.

I took mine off and I won't ever put it back on again. These people that say they are worried about dangerous evasive maneuvers causing rollovers... sure they can, with or without a swaybar. I've made some very aggressive maneuvers on and off road and I am convinced that my swaybar removal has actually assisted my driving style. I don't jerk the wheel when I see a piece of paper in the road like grandma does. I drive with control. Even with a rooftoop tent installed at all times on my very tall bed rack, I can still maneuver pretty hard. I'm not going to win any slaloms or rally races, and I'm going to get out-cornered by every car on the road, but offroad I'm a master of my domain.

Why would you want your two front suspensions linked with a bar? Now there's no independence between them. Removing the sway bar frees them up to travel independently. The sway bar doesn't add anything to suspension except make it harder for the truck's front end to flex/travel.

Removed mine 6 months ago and I will also never put it back on. The front end feels softer and more compliant, and I have not had any incidents that have scared me or made me question my decision. I recommend this highly. 09 Tacoma sway bar setup for sale, pm if interested

Removed mine about a week ago I think. not going back on.

 

I still have my swaybar after having taken it off 2 years ago, but all it does is get in the way in the garage. 2006 sport, PM if interested

Just to add, my sway bar is still in my shed. Buried under other truck parts, as good a place as any for it.

 

I removed my swaybar 5 years ago and I love it.

 

took mine off today. While yes there is more body roll. I dont feel as though its excessive. Even did some agressive swerving in a big empty parking lot at speed and didnt feel as though i was going to instantly roll like people make it out to seem. Hell VSC didnt even kick in.

That stated, the truck drives soooo much better. smoothed everything out! (fyi this with a wheelers 2in single AAL + OME N182 in the rear, and stock TRD OR coils and 5100's in the front @ 1.75)

I pulled mine off today. I'm on the stock sport suspension for now, and I love the way it feels. I'm going to "Big Dogs" in a week and 1/2. I have no lockers, so I need all the traction possible. After 1 1/2 weeks normal driving, a 6 hr each way road trip, and some off-roading at Big Dogs I'll make a final decision on whether or not I will put it back on.

 

I started this thread awhile ago when I took mine off. I love the way it drives now
