on used Toyota trucks be verified by analyzing the VIN number?

Is my best bet to have the seller show me the original window sticker
to back up any claims on factory equipment or packages to ensure
that TRD Sport decal is not phony?

The hood scoop might be more obvious on visual inspection but the locker may not be.

Not everyone keeps the window sticker (I do).
There should be a button for the locker.

trd sport doesn't come with a locker, on the read diff there should be a sticker that says something about lsd additive.

If you have an IPhone, there is a toyota Shopping tool that can be used to scan the barcode in the door jam. Should tell you everything that Toyota set up from factory.

Telling if a truck is a Trd sport or off road isn't hard. Start looking for bucket seats, outlet in bed, scoop or locker, LSD for sport, suspension, etc. lots to be faked if someone had too

Very true...easiest way to tell TRD is the seats and bed outlet.

The sport will have the color matched grille, side mirrors, door handles, and rear bumper, as well as the hood scoop.

The off road will have the chrome grille and bumper, plastic side mirrors and door handles. Inside, there will be a button for the eLocker, A-trac(09+), and possibly DAC

Take a good look at the grille and rear bumper to make sure it's not color matched usually if they did paint them it's just a bit off. As the guys said above though inside the bed is the give a way.

The VIN generally won't tell you anything other than the engine. Using the VIN though, the dealer can generate a build sheet from that to tell you what should be there.

GM uses an RPO Broadcast sticker. This is everything that is in that vehicle. Usually find them on the glovebox door. I don't know if Toyota does anything similar.

I would always insist on be given the window sticker if buying new or just having the dealer leave it on the window when I drive off the lot. I would always ask if the used car seller if he has the window sticker. One time I bought a new Chevrolet truck and told the dealer I wanted to keep it. Before delivery, they cleaned all the windows and removed all the window docs, washed the truck and sent me home in the truck without my window sticker! The retards! I asked about it and they said the window sticker got "lost" somehow. I would hope Toyota dealers operate better than that.

I doubt if many used car dealers provide the window sticker to buyers unless it happened to have been left in the glove box by the original owner.
