I'm looking to lift my 2012 Tacoma. I've seen differing opinions from so-called experts about the need for a replacement upper control arm. Some call it a uniball type. Who should I listen to?

I'd recommend a regular ballpoint type. They're closed so they don't get contaminated by the elements like uniballs do.

Oz-my lowers have uniballs....could be both!

Uniballs are stronger generally. And they offer a larger range of motion for better articulation. They are dry also. Ball joints are covered from the elements with a boot. They're greased. If you don't NEED a uniball, go with a ballpoint style upper. ;)

My reason for replacing the upper "A" arm isn't for articulation. Evidently the 2012 Tacoma doesn't have enough adjustment to get the correct caster after being lifted.

Sounds exactly right. I'd stick to a ball joint for simplicity :)

Oh and post pics when it's lifted

The ball joint boot is fragile and can get punctured if you breathe on it the wrong way. Once the boot is damaged, the ball joint craps out very quickly. Since the OP is in southern Cali, uniball will give less trouble.
