Rear diff whine...

    As the title says, after last weekends wheeling i was on my way home and started to hear a whine from my rear diff. It only does when under load (pressing gas) through gears 1-6. Is it my ring and pinion? Or is it possable that the diff oil has broken down? Has Lsd added to it.:confused:

    If it changes with acceleration it could definitely be the R + P. Start with a diff fluid change. If the sound gets worse, you'll want to have it checked out professionally.

    If you dragged the pinion flange or driveshaft while wheeling, it's possible you damaged the crush sleeve that sets pinion preload. If that's the case, you're looking at a new gear setup at a minimum.

    Satoshi'd grill. blacked out badges. aftermarket sound system. De-chromed and color matched. OME 885s + Dakars with 3rd leaf removed. LR UCAs. Scs stealth 6 with 285 duratracs. BAMF sliders
    I had something similar to this that i noticed. After offroading when i let off of the gas around 50mph it sounded like a whine from the rear diff. Got home sprayed off the under carriage and took a quick look for any thing out of the ordinary. Took it for a drive again and no whine, never figured out what it was. Good luck with figuring it out.

    Mine started to whine to. Pretty sure it was the pinion bearing or the crush sleeve. Didn't exactly figure it out cuz I just regeared. It only happened when there was load on the diff. Either accelerating, or decelerating from engine braking. Made no noise at all in neutral. Put the rear on jack stands and had to set the ebrake while it was spinning the tires with the locker engaged to get enough load to produce the noise. It was crazy loud from the back of the diff.

    We pulled the diff and tried to diagnose it without pulling the gears apart but couldn't tell what it was. We did find a nick in the ring gear that was over the pinion pattern so that possibly could have caused the noise, but we doubted it.

    Is it possible to do the rear in a differnt gear for a bit? As long as i dont engage 4x4?

    Yes, you just make damn sure you don't engage 4wd. In fact, I would take the front driveline out until the gears matched.

    I would think so too but its only making the noise under acceleration not decel...like when i gear down

    Typical pattern is noise under acceleration followed by noise under both accell and decell, followed by constant noise, followed by kablooie.

    8.4 rear diffs are solid. The elocker diffs are about as solid a potato chips.
