Have an 06' trd 4.0 v6 6speed. I drive a lot, both city and freeway working my pool route. I hate how 1st gear is so short and how I'm struggling to go 70-75 without guzzling gas at 2500-3000 rpm.

How should I regear it to make my life easier?

I would like to have a longer 1st gear and longer 6th. Both for easier, quicker driving and the ability to keep it under 2000 rpm without driving like my grandma.

Was also thinking about the trd quickshifter..

    Any ideas??

Not sure if i would re-gear higher but the TRD quickshifter is an awsome addition. It is one of my favorite mods

Well right off the bat anytime you run a 4x4 truck at 75 mph you're gonna guzzle gas. No matter what. Regearing to a higher ratio really won't help that at all. Infact after a regear if you choose to keep runnin 33's your rpms will be even higher. Also with a regear, you'll be slamming through the gears even faster.

If you'd like a longer first and sixth gear and lower rpm's. Just throw 35's on with stock gearing. ;)

I really like my URD short shifter. Makes rowing through the gears much more enjoyable.

OP, are you talking about regearing at the axles to a higher (numerically lower) gear ratio, or replacing the 1st and 6th gear cogs in the transmission?

I think he means longer 1st and 6th cogs (custom) or the 3.73 gears the auto has. Both do not satisfy the cheap route so they negate any savings in gas. He wants to be doing 2300 rpm at 75.

The auto gets better mileage at highway speeds OP.

Randy's lists nothing lower than 4.11, same with Yukon.

X has 3.15, that must cruise low on the highway. 4 cyl 4x4 has the 4.10.

Don't think changing 1st gear would help mpg enough to justify.

But, FJ's 6sp tranny has either a .72 or .79 ratio in 6th, where Tacoma's is .85, but I don't know if it is swapable (ie just 2 cogs, or if new shafts required).

Swapping to a taller tire is an option, but it will be heavier, and not save much mpg.

It's 2wd, but still guzzling just as much gas it seems. Sounds like i should throw the "Regearing" idea out the window and get some taller tires... Maybe it's my truck needing something else to help the mpg. Anything that may need to be done to improve mpg for a truck with 90k on it? Might be somethIng that's wearing or needs replacement? Alignment and balancing is off, that isn't helping at all. Any suggs'?

Will it still help save mpg with "taller/heavier" tires?

    Pretty much...

You could try lighten the truck and or go to smaller tires, your RPMs will be higher but you may gain MPG from the lighter wheel/tire combo.

The only cost effective thing to do is try and cut weight from the truck and modify your driving style.

The FJ 6 speed is set up as an all wheel drive. It may not work when swapped to a Tacoma at all. I am also not 100% sure on the crossover from FJ 6 speed to Tacoma 6 speed though either. Maybe an FJ guy can chime in.

Wouldn't swapping the rear end gear with the 3.15 out of an X-Runner do exactly what the OP is looking for?

That would be awesome for some of the Prerunner guys if that was possible. Actually I wish I could get that in both front and rear! Although that would make reverse suck that much more.

As for the X-Runner's cruising rpm, you have to figure the diameter of the tires. They're a lot smaller on that truck and the difference isn't that much.

    PreRunner: 245/75-R16, 684 rev/mile, 3.73:1 diff, that's 2551 driveshaft revs per mile.
    PreRunner: 265/70-R16, 680 rev/mile, 3.73:1 diff, that's 2536 driveshaft revs per mile.
    X-Runner: 255/45-R18, 744 rev/mile, 3.15:1 diff, that's 2344 driveshaft revs per mile.

So 8.1% and 7.6% lower than the PreRunner tire sizes, comparatively. So instead of 2000 rpm at 55 mph, it would be 1840 rpm.
