There is still no way I am waiting 10000 miles to change oil in any new vehicle, regardless of "broken in" change intervals. I'm about to go 0-20w today on my oil change with a factory filter and I gaurantee that it will not stay in there for 10000 miles. Oil does not last that long unless you have some crazy fill spec....like 10 qts.

my 2012 tacoma has 0w20 synthetic in it for that particular 2.7 engine the oil change is 5000 miles, the second dealership also knows this that is the reason my maitenance work is going to there.now i have a 2012 corolla whith a different 2.7 engine in it it uses 0w20 synthetic oil and you change it every 10000 thousand miles,if owners are to stupid to read up on their maitenance on a brand new vehichle,i feel sorry for how lazy the american people has got.read your toyota care if you still think tacoma 2.7 is 10000 mile oil change good luck with your truck engine holding up

    First, I have a 2008 with 80k on it, and I use Mobil-1 5w30 and change it at 5k.

    That said...

A quality synthetic such as Mobil-1 or Amsoil will last 10k, no problem, even without some "crazy fill specs". I've been around the block, and I've seen a shitload of used oil analysis reports. Quality synthetic is good to 10k.
Beyond 10k, the additive package becomes a concern, and I would not consider it without an added bypass filtration system, AND a filter change at 10k.
With the filter change, the additive package is replenished and will hold for another 10k.

Finally, on the 5k/10k interval, Toyota has published some conflicting information, but the factory recommended interval for the 2012 and later 2.7 with 0w20 synthetic is in fact 10,000 miles. Some of the earlier publications indicated 5k.

    Whatever.

This is in conflict with information that many others have been given by Toyota.

    Conflict
toyota has it wrote out in black and white,go to a good dealership they will give you no problems with your 2011 and 12 tacoma 5000 mile oil change that is covered under toycare,im just tring to keep tacoma owners from making a large investment in their truck then do the wrong service intervals.my wife owns a 2012 corolla and it has a different engine than the 2.7 tacoma and it does go 10000 miles between oil changes, this should be the end of this discussion

If the dealer over fills it thats their issue not yours. If your engine blows thats their fault if you can provide documentation that they service the vehicle

If anything, the Corolla should run a shorter interval because it's capacity is 2 quarts lower and the filter is smaller.... just as a Diesel pickup can go 10k on non-synthetic because it carries 10-15 quarts and runs a full 1qt filter.

And the manual says the "...engine oil capacity is a reference only...check the oil level on the dipstick."

So I would say that they have addressed the discrepancy.

OP, glad they worked it out for you. I know its free, but do yourself a favor and change your own oil. You will know its done right, and not have to worry.

For the record, I think its insane to go 10,000 miles before an oil change. I don't care if its synthetic or not.

5.5 always brings mine to the top of the full mark. I ended up letting the dealership change it last time and I didn't look at the receipt till a few days later, they only showed 5 quarts. I checked the level and it's about middle of the safe range.

Overfilling the oil from what I remember being told can cause one issue which is too much pressure in the oil lines causing them to possibly blow. But I would be angry too if they fill my truck incorrectly. That is why I do my own maintenance on the truck. I am the only one I can trust.

I think this will always be an ongoing problem. I use to be one of the guys that really stressed over this point, but after reading everyone of the threads on the subject I have seen people running 5, 5.5 and 6 and arguing their case for all, but what I haven't seen are any threads showing a damaged engine from oil starvation or overfilling. So I would think it's safe to say anything from 5-6 is fine. I was just surprised that my local dealership only put in 5. I would have thought they would look at the their manual which I assume says 6 and set their oil machine accordingly.

Why is this still really going on? Oil sits in the bottom of the pan anyways and the pump tube/oil strainer is damn close to the bottom of the pan. A half quart of oil won't make a bit of difference. Make sure there is oil on the stick and forget it. Good lord.

And I change my oil every 3K...with Full Synthetic. Oil WILL last a good while, additives in the oil don't. I'll do mine every 3K. Thanks.

I use Mobil 1 advance synthetic and Mobil oil filter. And I stick with 5k/ 5 months. Turn off your engine wipe deep stick let it sit there for a minute or two then check the lvl of oil. If u check you oil while engine is running yes it will say half. I use 5 quarts. Hope this will help.
