    Pull the chunk out.
Divide the number of ring gears by the number of pinion gears.

Or if you still have the body to the truck you can look at the tag on the door.

Or.. I think this is right.
Put one side of the axle on a jack stand.
Take a piece of chalk and mark dead center at 6 o'clock on the tire.
Mark dead center 6 o'clock on the driveshaft.

Turn the tire one full revolution and count how many times the drive shaft turns.
Will give you a good idea.

Say it turns 4.5 times. Gears are likely 4:56. And so on.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Cool. Glad you found out, might make it easier to sell.

I was wrong on the last paragraph about determining gear ratios.
If its an open diff, you rotate the tire 2 complete revolution and count the times the pinion or driveshaft turns. Only one wheel has to be off the ground.

If its limited slip or has a locker in it, "both" tires have to be off the ground and you only have to turn the tire "one" full revolution.

Regardless, its good info to know. Especially if your at a pick-a-part place "salvage yard" and come across an axle with no identification.

    Glws.
