So stupidly I cleaned my filter and charged it....I did 2 coats just to get it blended all over... well now its sucking gas like a hooker w/ bills to pay. I removed the K&N and replaced it with an OEM paper filter..but when I did I noticed my charcoal filter is rippled up as if it got wet. the odd part is I allowed my K&N filter to dry for about a week before I was able to install it again. and it wasn't any more lubed than when I have recharged it before. there are no sensors going off like MAF or anything but would it help it I removed my charcoal filter? nothing is really mechanically wrong ...yet just want to make sure I don't have an uh-oh issue later

Remove the bolt that my ratchet is on and the one to the right of it:

Once the cover is off, you can see the mass airflow sensor:

Remove the two phillips head screws and the connector and its out:

make sure you use cleaner specifically for mass airflow sensors, like the one i linked above

It evaporates pretty quickly, probably about 15-20 seconds after you spray you can reinstall it

My Lexus IS300 had pretty poor mileage until I cleaned the MAF one day. In the Tacoma I've generally accepted that 16~mpg is normal now with the lift and tires. But now that I'm thinking about it; gas mileage has started to suffer as the truck has aged. Not a single problem with the truck except it's just using more gas than it did before.

I'm going to clean mine and then fill up tomorrow. Interested to see what my next tank yields.

What's really interesting is that I've been focusing a lot on it lately with my driving style. Most of my miles are highway miles too so there's really no excuse. I used to get 21-22mpg with the stock setup pretty regularly.

I'll report back when I run through this tank of gas.

I would concentrate on the 2nd tank, the ECM takes a bit to relearn.

That's true. Do you think it would be smart to reset the ECU with a battery disconnect and such or would it take just as long?

I was askin that to my boss and he said the less the better when it comes to playing around with your ECM.. so I didn't disconnect my battery and so far I can tell its breathing better.. don't feel is "lagging"

Wanted to follow up on this. Just filled up again yesterday. I went from 16.05 mpg to 18.6mpg! I think that number might even get a little higher still.

So my initial hunch is that I see a TON of threads where people are reporting that their mileage has taken a shit. People with miles on the truck. My thought was that the MAF sensor needed cleaning as it had gotten dirty over the years. My mileage had started to tank too so I cleaned mine up. An extra 16% on my fuel economy for 5 minutes of work is worth it for sure. :D
