i like the explanations. makes sense. im not against additional safety, just wondering how much yanking power you could put on this truck before really expensive stuff starts to break. one way to find out i guess heh heh heh

I'm not an engineer, especially a materials engineer, so I can't get into the tensile strength of the frame and receiver but if I had to take an educated guess, I would say -- a lot!

    Build thread in sig...
With the exception of stupidly large running starts using non kinetic straps, you will snap axles and burn up your torque converter/clutch before you damage for frame.

    Well... whatdya know.

I don't think they're made in America and proof loaded but I'd feel safe using them.

-Our ¾” forged shackles meet performance requirements of Federal Specification RR-C-271D, Type IVA, Class 2. The working load limit is noted on each shackle. The WLL for the ¾” shackle is 4 ½ tons, ultimate yield is 57,000lbs.

-We use standard 3/8” hitch pins that have a minimum break strength of 50,000lbs.

-The shackle bracket is forged and has a minimum break strength of 57,000lbs.

    Good news. Works for me!

Some asshole stole my shackle off the back of my truck...I suggest you all keep your shackles locked up in your tool box or inside in a storage compartment.

Doesn't matter what its rated for if its MIA when you need it!

I got a reciever with shackle from Amazon and the damn thing will only slide in about half way before getting stuck, it looks like the corners are just a hair too big. Any way to get it to fit? I thought about just sanding it a little bit, but that would be very tedious with just paper...

He took the time to email someone else and pass on my question then fwd the answer. After he asked me why I needed this info I replied:

    He answered in return:
See below, hope this is enough info to cover your questions.

And the info I posted was fwd'd from another employee. Well my faith is restored back in Warn but maybe not so much in that particular guy, he wasn't very pleasant.

Yeah... I do. Sadly, as I think they look kinda cool hanging down. :poser: Haha.

Air grinder with abrasive sanding disk or a angle grinder with a flap wheel would be my choice. A file would be my last choice but not sand paper, unless you've got a belt sander. HF sells some cheap stuff you could probably get it done with if you don't have those tools.

xEleventy billion on the receiver shackle, I've had the same one for 8 years now, works great!!!

For the guy with the one that won't fit- if you don't have the $$$ for something in the way of a power sander or grinder, use a file, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how quick a file will chew through the metal! (WAY quicker than hand sanding!!!)

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
First things I bought for my truck:

ARB snatch strap (the 17.5k strap is sufficient for the Tacoma)
    Smitty receiver mounted shackle
    Extra Smitty shackles

Don't cheap out on your gear.

Warn also makes a receiver shackle and TJM makes shackles. Warn is USA and TJM I believe is Australia. The Smitty stuff I bought was China. FYI, if you care.

Do they make a shackle to go in your receiver(just the shackle)? Or does it all come attached to a receiver hitch?

The truck weights a lot less then 6500# you could pick the whole damn thing up with a crane and a standard 2X2" draw bar.

You don't need the dog bone with a shackle, unless the pin is seized...

I don't think I would use just the pin for fear of bending it making it a real pain to get out on the other hand through a draw bar the shear force is close to 30,000#
