Long Day in the shop...

Woke up this morning and drove to my buddies shop at 9:30 am to get some stuff done to the front end.. We replaced both front wheel bearings, both front CV axles, changed the front diff fluid, changed the oil, did the brakes, installed the diff drop....loooong ass day, but worth it. the front wheel bearings were TOAST. We had to cut the bearings off the hub, they were dry, and full of rust. She rides a lot better, no vibration in the front end or any kind of friction.. Please excuse my lack of photos or HOW-TO's. We were tryin to mash thru this ASAP..

Hey I was thinking about doin my front wheel bearings, i'm getting a little wobble in the steering wheel at 50-60 mph. How hard were they to do? I have access to a press, etc.. how much did they cost and where from?

it was a pain the ^%&*%&* ass dude. It wouldnt fit in our press, and we called every shop in the area, even the toyota dealer, and they said they couldnt press the bearing out of the hub. we had to fab something up in order to press the bearing out of the hub. we used a 3/4 inch steel plate..cut a hole, tapped it so that we could screw the 4 bolts into it,mounted the hub to it, then used the press to push the bearing out. That worked, except it only pushed half the bearing out - so we had to cut the other half off. The bearing itself was about $150 i think

 

damn, I may just take it to the dealer :|
I read something somewhere about them not coming out and buying new hubs. ugh.. headache comin lol

 

How did you determine that the bearings and CV axle needed to be replaced? How many miles do you have?

How much did the new CV axles cost?

Where did you find the replacement CV axles? I tore the boot on mine and could not find a replacement axle anywhere except Toyota. Luckily there is someone in town that rebuilds them.

 

well, i tore my CV boot a couple weeks ago, and when we took that axle out to fix the boot, is when we realized we needed to replace the bearings & axle. The bearings wouldnt spin freely, and when spun by hand, we heard a nasty grinding noise. When we got the axle out to fix the boot, we couldnt get the slip yolk off (if thats what its called?), it was frozen. it took a beating to get it apart. I probably could have gone w/o replacing both axles, but decided to do it anyways. A fresh front end is nice.

Before doing all this work, i had a bad vibration in the front end while driving on the freeway..it's gone now.

My buddy ordered them, im not sure where he got em.


Also, the fluid that came out of the front diff, was NASTY. It was full of metal

 

I have a bad vibration between 40 and 60. I have had tires balanced twice and I still get the vibration. Also, I have this going on...

Shouldnt the bearings last more than 57k miles?

 

thats what mines doing - i bet if you drain your diff, it'll be all nasty and full of metal as well. the ring & pinion are worn, thats why you're getting the movement

normally yes, but if you actually USE your truck, and wheel it a lot, then these things will probably wear a lot faster. I've drivin thru swamps, streams, etc - also, being at pismo, the mixture of salt / sand / water doesnt help at all either

 

how many miles on your truck, sounds like alot of parts!

i gotta replace my wheel bearings soon.....and im gonna go ahead and replace my cv's while im at it.

 

it only has about 57k on it, but its been beat up pretty good

 

you forgot to add running toll roads to, good job. feels like a new truck now.

I enjoyed AZ tho, the place is so much cleaner than LA. Had a blast on the lake too.
