Rust on my cab, Help!

I recently took off my camper shell off my Tacoma I recently purchased and I have quite a bit of rust and stripped paint in the shape of the seal from the camper shell. The previous owner failed to mention the stripped paint on the cab and I was ignorant and did not realize that this would occur...




Any suggestions on what I could do that wouldn't cost a whole lot of money?

If money is a big issue for you, repair it your self. You can pick up the rattle can touch up paint and clear coat and I bet repair it for under a hundred bucks. A shop will want to spray the entire top, I would just blend it.

 

Looks like the camper has just been on there a good while and rubbed paint off. I would try and sand just the rust area and apply a paint.

How long was the cap on ?

 

The cap should never contact the cab

 

The rubber seal will come in contact. Rubber will rub paint off

 

You talking bout a boot ?

 

Most camper tops have a rubber seal between the cap and truck so you can open the rear window and not have to worry about weather.

The problem for me is that on this site , people call what I call a canopy , a cap , shell , or camper shell interchangeably

Couldn't tell you, I bought the truck with the cap still on it.

 

So let's clear this up , was there a boot between the cap / camper / shell and the cab

 

Yes there is a boot/seal/rubber weather seal thing that goes up against the cab.

Like said above, if money is tight, there are options for doing it yourself. If you want it done professionally, it shouldn't be outrageous - there are plenty of shops that can blend paint.

Your truck looks white, which should make it very easy for them to color match some paint. They can do their own prep, spray, and clear for you. I would spend the money to have it done right, so you can feel good knowing it was taken care of properly.

 

Yeah I think I might go this route, going to go get some quotes later this week!
