It won't kill it. 1/2 qt probably won't even be noticeable. Overfilling way too much won't kill them either, but it will cause oil to go places where it isn't supposed to go. It's your choice to run it or not, and you'll probably be fine, but the correct level is the correct one, and all others are not.

Always used fram filters...never had a problem. 175,000 on first truck then wrecked it. 165,000 on second truck now selling it. Whats the problem with fram filters. Sorry to thread jack. OP remove your filter and let it drain that oil out then put your filter back on. That will get you close to the correct level.

Unscrew the filter, replace it with a Toyota OEM filter, and you're all set.

The oil change on the V6 is the simplest oil change on a vehicle that Workman has ever done. The filter position is very handy. The next time you do it, you will be amazed how much easier it is.

Always change your own oil if you are physically able to do so. Or you have a very trust worthy shop and you know its getting done right.

Workman used to work at a quick lube type place years ago, and has seen the horrors of a bunch of dirtbags messing up oil changes. Dry starts, over-torqued drain plugs, stripped drain holes, and getting dirt in the engine all occurred weekly if not daily. Workman hated it. Maybe that's what you get when you pay people bare bones minimum wage to work on your 30K pickup.

Doing it yourself saves time as well, as it can be easily and correctly done at your own leisure when you have a down time at home. You dont have to drive to a shop and sit in their boring waiting room, drinking their shitty coffee and reading their lame magazines while getting coughed on by little kids anymore! Oh, and its cheaper to do yourself...

OP - always go by the dipstick - if you have too much, drain some out or change the filter to remove the excess... you should be ok if you leave it, but why take the chance on your 20k+ investment? Do it correctly now so there will never be a chance of an issue... I would never leave an engine with too little or too much oil.

Over filling "way too much" will kill an engine. The crankshaft will work as a blender and whip the oil into a foamy froth. The oil pump will suck in the air/oil whipped cream and get air bound then the engine will die from lack of lubrication in a few minutes. Seriously!

That being said 1/2 quart probably isn't going to be noticed. But like others said just replace the filter and you will be golden.

    +1

User Gelo has the attitude that the manual calls for 6 quarts, so he uses 6 quarts, ignored the dipstick, and gives shit to the rest of us for "underlubricating" our engines.

Go with a Toyota filter. It was designed specifically for your engine. They even come pre sealed and greased o ring.

    Yup.

Better than any aftermarket filter, and only $4 in quantity.

$88 shipped will cover you for 100,000 miles.

Where do you go to buy them in bulk like that and have them shipped?

The manual is stating total amount of oil. When changing oil you never get every bit out.

Over filling CAN harm an engine. I'm not saying half a quart will. But what happens when too much oil is in the oil pan it comes into direct contact with moving parts(crank shaft, connecting rods). The result is the oil becomes too frothy causing too many bubbles in the oil reducing its lubricating effect.

Toyota of Dallas (I don't have a link for theirs)

Air filters are about $16, oil filters are about $4.
Shipping is generally a flat $9 up to $100, so buy a box of 20, or 10 and a few air filters, and the shipping ends up not being a huge percentage.

So I checked the dipstick earlier this morning and the oil line is about 1/4 an inch over the full mark. I think I'm just going to let it be. How much damage can that do, honestly?

As has been mentioned before, 1/2 quart over or under is not going to hurt anything.
