Are you using the fusion for a base coat? I can't say how well that would work. I wouldn't think you would have any problems with the fusion adhering to the grill since its formulated for plastic.

You shouldn't need adhesion promoter, but make sure you sand off some of the chrome before you get started painting. Sand with 400 or so to get the surface ready. Then clean it with wax and grease remover. The adhesion promoter couldn't hurt, but probably won't need it.
When painting with a rattle can, be patient. Light coats at first with plenty of time to dry, later coats can be heavier, but still be patient.

    Thanks Travis and Brett.

    You have confirmed my plan.
I had planned to lightly sand the chrome plastic and clean with laquer thinner (I will test in an inconspicuous area first), the go with the Krylon Fusion as the base coat.

Someone in another thread was disappointed with the match of Duplicolor Superwhite and the factory paint. I have plastic scraps from the grill cut put to test on.

Completed mine about a month ago. I wet sanded a little when done. I could probably hit it with another can of clear and wet sand again to get it super glossy.

No, the adhesion promoter acts as a primer

I was going to order superwhite paint from automotivetouchup.com, how many 12 oz aerosol cans should I buy to paint my grille?

One partial can of Adhesion Promotor, one can base color (Superwhite), one can clear coat.

(I wound up first doing Krylon fusion white but found it just a tad bright. Re-did it with Duplicolor Superwhite: slightly too yellow. Went back with Krylon Fusion White with Duplicolor clearcoat, and it just a wee smidgon darker than stock, but good 'nuf!)

i just dechromed my new (to me) 2003 taco...to be honest, i did the bumpers all successful, even the rims, with a rattle can...the plastic chrome didnt take to well...and lo and behold..a new one on line is only $49... with shipping...way easier than sanding and repainting...just buy an aftermarket online, keep your toyota emblem in the center though ... i will say i messed up a bit and painted the bumper fillers under the headlights black and now am thinking i want them back to the maroon color of the truck....rest of it looks siiiick! :)

    What I did

Acquire 2nd grille in case I screw up:

    IMG_20121218_213118_zps85cc3c42_bc5d22509ba32aea20a93ebbbb2fe08371fb9d2a.jpg

Removed chrome trim and scuffed with a red scotchbright pad until it looked like brushed aluminum:

Laid on 2 coats of adhesion promoter, 3 coats of Silver Streak matched paint, and 3 coats of clear coat. Left me with this finish:

    IMG_20130101_140317_zpscebb60f2_ae4fdbb44a4d73c63ec36330451eb796b0776387.jpg

Did a little wet sanding with 2000 grit; probably could have went a little further:

    IMG_20130101_142012_zpsb71b63d9_4611aa6461f3618fd2c24132baf692915b1ac674.jpg

Hand polished with polishing compound and a microfiber cloth:

    IMG_20130101_142653_zps80fb6f5e_ebef471edaa83219ba283b406c2b2fcf820a09ac.jpg

Reattached the newly painted trim to the rest of the gill (the tricky part) and then compared it to the stock:

And then enjoyed the new look :)

What steps did you do to take it apart and reattach it. Did you grind down the clips or another way?

Actually I just pried them up with a flathead screwdriver and pulled the peices of plastic off with a pair of needle-nose pliers. To reattached it, I sacrificed an old soldering iron tip in my 60watt iron and melted what was left of the tabs back to the grille, and used the pieces of plastic I pulled off when taking it apart as filler where there wasn't much plastic to melt back together.

I taped mine up and painted mine yesterday.

    Sanded
    Adhesion promotor
    Primer
    Sand
    Paint
Sit for 3 hours then sand
    Another 2 coats of paint

Sitting for 12 hours now and looks damn good. I can't wait to see how well it matches up

So I couldn't wait. I put a coat of wax on before I installed. At least right now (in low light) I am very happy with the results.
