Considering purchase - Test drove '13 Reg Cab

Hello all,

Posted before about advice trading my Ranger for Tacoma, got some good info. Yesterday had the opportunity to test drive 2013 Reg Cab 2.7 in black. I enjoyed it. It did have less power than my Ranger, but not overly less (the ranger being to 4.0 V6). It felt like a bigger stronger truck however, and I enjoyed the new touch screen radio and other controls. Would probably throw some different wheels on it and possibly some other add ons, but other than that. Had the regular cab in Black, Red and Magnetic Gray. Liked all three. I was really impressed witht he dealship too. I'm from Pittsburgh, and they started talking numbers and were going to be very fair on my trade and also inspections for life as well as the 2 year Toyota Care. I could not pull the trigger though, trying not to be an impulse buyer. Really not posing any questions here, just expressing my like for the Tacoma and may be joining the family. Any thoughts appreciated.

 

You will like the 4 cylinder, I got a access cab with one and it is great. Are the ones you drove manual or auto? The 5 speed is ideal for this motor and is a blast to drive.

 

You could get the Tacoma in a 4.0 v6 if you don't think the 2.7 had enough power.

 

The one I drove was the 5spd manual. Every reg cab there was a 5spd, which is what I'd prefer - my Ranger is a 5spd, so I'm used to it. The most I'd be hauling is a couple lawn mowers, or a load of mulch maybe once or twice a year, so I think the 4cyl would be fine for that, plus I'm looking forward to getting better gas mpg. I'm getting like 14 now in the Ranger. Just having trouble with the color, I love black, but I know its hard to keep clean, I've owned black before. The red and gray were both sharp as well.

 

You will not be able to find a more reliable, refined truck for the money.

Your magnetic gray is nice. That color is growing on me. Same truck wa son the lot in Pittsburgh, except in the manual.

 

I drove a 2013 but ended up buying a 2008. These trucks are phenomenal. Having owned a ranger that I loved, I can say the Tacoma is that much better.

 

If that is what you're going to use your truck for the 2.7 will be more than enough. Sounds as if you've made your decision.

Buy what you'll use it for. Don't be swayed by thr naysayers.

 

Yea that'd most likely all it'll be used for. I've been driving a Ranger for years and haven't ever towed anything or hauled anything above a few mowers, mulch, or a motorcycle at one point. I'm actually looking forward to the 2.7 because my Ranger seems to be really hogging some gas. Ford just keeps telling me to replace the fuel filter... and I've done that, and still getting only between 12-13 miles to the gallon.

I wish I could say I have made my decision, lol, but I'm still kicking it around. I am leaning the way of the Tacoma, but then again I'm back to 5 years of payments, rather than 3. I also am having trouble choosing a color too, which is a dumb excuse, haha, but I want something that I won't regret.

 

I came from fords you wont regret buying a toyota. It will literally be the best decision you've ever made. Just the reliability factor alone is worth it .

Probably be better than this. My 2000 4.0 v6 with 33's gets 17-18.

 

I'm reading on some threads on here that they are only getting 15 with their 2.7. I would not buy if I knew it was going to get that. If I'm trading my Ford V6 for the Toyota 2.7 - I would at least like to get 19 around town... That with regular cab 4x4 5 spd manual.

 

i have had 2 rangers my self and i love my 12 tacoma the best. I would get the v6 4.0 it has plenty of power and still gets 18+ mpg.

 

I have only gone through 1 tank of gas so far and got 19 mpg around town. I have an auto trans. This is my 2nd Taco. My last one was an '03 with the same config. It got 20 - 21 mpg. I will expect the same when my '13 is broken in.

 

That's good to hear... I hope to get that if I make the purchase. I feel I'm also giving up a little more, because I'm set on the base regular cab 4x4 due to finances, so no power lock/windows/cruise/etc. Obviously there are mods for all of these, but my Ranger had it all factory. Still though I guess I have to keep in mind I'm getting an all around better truck.

 

I agree with the access cab 5 speed.
Try an access cab (especially if your tall I'm 6'3") more room & more goodies. I got the convenience package on mine. After owning 3 RC PreTacos I enjoy the extra room. The RCs felt kind of cramped especially after I bought the AC (I kept the '95 PreTaco for a while to haul firewood). Now I'm comfy and don't even have to put the seat all the way back.

I get 23 to 24 MPGs hwy (lots of hills where I live) & 20 to 21 MPGs city with sumer gas with my 2.7L 4x4 Ac with a 3" lift on stock tires.
When I put on my 255/85/16 BFG KM2s I lose 1 to 2 MPGs on hilly hwy & gain 1 to 2 MPGs on flat hwy.

 

Check my fuelly avatar ... highway/city average about 23 mpg.

 

Yes but he's talking about a 4x4.
