New to the forum (great site btw, has been very helpful) and just got a 2010 prerunner sr5 double cab this past month. I want to change my crap stock tires and get a more aggressive look. After reading this forum, it seems most of you all recommend the bigger 265. I think I want to keep the stock size on my truck (cheaper and helps on MPG, I think). Can anyone post some pics of their tacomas with 245 AT tires? Wanna see what it looks like. Thanks.

Is there any rubbing on the 265's or trimming involved?

265/75r16s won't rub in normal driving or even in decent off roading.

It is only slightly taller than the stock size for the TRDs and whatnot.

It will affect gas mileage though, even if only slightly.

How much do the 265s affect mpg?

Fuel economy is affected by much more than tire height.

You will be changing the width which will equal more rolling resistance.

You will be changing the tread pattern which can equal more or less rolling resistance.

You will be changing the weight, probably heavier, which will hurt FE.
(You can offset this with light weight wheels)

Taller will actually help you out on the highway but not in town.

Etc. . . Height, width, weight, rolling resistance, treat pattern, whatever. . . There is no way to simply say "going from 245s to 265s will affect your FE exactly this much". (especially without knowing the specs of the tire you have and the one your getting).

Are you getting something like Michelin LTX MS2s or BFG KM2s? That alone will make a huge difference in FE.

I'm looking at either toyo open country 11 at or the bfg rugged terrain...trying to decide 245 or 265...I originally didn't even think about changing from the 245 but this board has made me think twice....but I'm ultimately going after the more aggressive look but don't want to take that big of a hit in mpg (commute 35 miles a day, almost all highway)

Use this and see exactly what happens.... http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/wheels-tires/12697-tire-size-tool.html

I priced out 245's vs. 265's and quickly found a price difference of anywhere $8-15 @ tire BUT 70 series P-Metrics are popular in both...

Price shop,do your homework and good luck....

I did notice a drop in MPG's going from P265/70/16 to LT 265/75/16's ;heavier tire and more agressive tread BUT my commute is usually 6-10miles a day..;)

This is a common problem in my opinion. Your tire tread is very specifically designed to handle certain conditions. Choose your next tire off of the terrain you will be driving on not which tread design and size looks good. Once you've narrowed down what type of tire you need THEN compare looks.

If you don't wheel hard or haul a lot you can get "P" rated tires instead of "LT" in order to shave some weight.

What do you drive on most? What other conditions would you like a tire to handle?

Yea I realize that, I just want to minimize the damage in mpg....like I said I will mainly be driving highway with the very occasional off road situation...I live in the south, so winter conditions are not common. Thanks for the info.

I would go with 265/75/16. This is my third Tacoma and the first time going with a bigger tire. The MPG are very close to the same but it looks so much better. Have not had a true off road test yet but it has to be better than the stock tires and I have had them in some bad places. Weight is your biggest concern.
