So...did the timing chain tensioner go bad causing the timing chain to get loose and jump a tooth or something? What's the story?

Probably just a manufacturing defect, that happens sometimes regardless of make or model. Warranty should take care of it.(Im assuming it still has warranty?) Keep us posted.

If not a manufacturing defect, i would then guess it would be a problem with the timing chain tensioner, or a VVT-I controller malfunction. I know you didn't ask what we thought the problem was, and these are just my guesses at what the problem might be. Hopefully you have it fixed and back home soon.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1363313292.106958.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1363313305.939109.jpg

Did the engine make any loud knocking noises while it was running rough? If the cams were that out of whack the valves may have been hitting the tops of the pistons.

The cams can't be misaligned. I would start questioning the tech who diagnosed it.

Misaligned may be a poor choice of words, but it sounds like he means the timing is off. Which in its own way is a misalignment between the Camshaft and the crankshaft positions.

^^This. If the timing chain became loose for some reason and the cam gears jumped a few teeth it would run horrible and possibly cause engine damage.

That is insane. I think you need to locate a new dealer. Is this being repaired under the drive train warranty? If so I would be calling Toyota Corporate for some answers. You could rebuild the entire frigging truck ( engine transmission and all ) in a month.

At this point I would be pushing for an entire engine replacement.
