Why There Will Never Be A Diesel Tacoma

The thread title is the bad news.

The good news is there will probably be a hybrid Tacoma some day. Maybe even sooner than you'd think. And don't worry, it won't be a bad thing.

A recent interview with Karl Schlicht, chief of sales and marketing at Toyota, explains why:

As Toyota continues to push diesel out of countries where it has historically been popular, the chances for Toyota to bring diesel to countries that haven't seen diesel options before also drops. Toyota has committed to gas hybrids as the stepping stone between now and an all-electric future.

I was hoping for a diesel / electric hybrid

 

It's always a possibility, but that's an expensive combination for consumer's pocketbooks to cope with. Considering how close we're getting to moving right to all electric, I'm not sure automakers are going to "bother" investing in something like that. It's easier, and cheaper for consumers, to continue to develop gas hybrids.

doesn't mean there won't be any diesels. I have it directly from an ex-VP at Toyota that he expects diesels eventually due to the fuel standards they have to achieve. he did say that there wasn't any current plans for them though, just that he personally expects them eventually.

 

I had read that Honda was developing one, and that it made more sense than a gas/hybrid. Personally I think turbine hybrids make the most sense as turbines are far more efficient and can burn a much wider variety of fuel.

 

Watch for one in a VW before too long.
