They guys, for a while now I've had this shift knob on my truck and for a very long time its been rattling. The inside of the ball sounds like there is something loose and rattles when I'm at a stead highway speed. I unscrewed the knob and the treads are all tight with the ball..

    ANY IDEAS?

THIS IS SOOOO ANNOYING, AS I DRIVE ALOT.

Looks like your missing the lock nut underneath it. I'm not near my truck so I can't take a pic but mine has a nut under the knob.

I have this problem and it is driving me crazy.

    I have the lock nut.

I removed the knob and lock nut, and from what I see, hear and feel, the brass fitting inside the grey ball knob is not 100% tight like a tiger.....

    Anyone have this issue?

The rattle only happens sometimes at speeds 15-65mph, and goes away as soon as I place my hand on the shifter.

interesting, I think i will give this a shot, i suppose more weight for a weighted shifter is never a bad thing right.

Yep, you're missing the lock nut, and the yarn trick will work to take out a rattle with enough patience!

Is there any update on this? I've also got a pretty concerning rattle while my shifter is in gear and resting on it's own. If I use my hand to lightly push forward on the shifter, the noise is gone. Is the rattling coming from the transmission? Throwout bearing?

    None... yet
I have the same problem with my shifter. I have an aftermarket shift knob and like the others in this thread have said, the metal insert is loose. I would remove your knob and drive it around a bit to see if the rattling goes away. If it does then it is just your knob. If it doesn't then it is transmission related.

I'm going to guess there's some sort of medicated ointment available for rattling knobs. Not sure if it's OTC or prescription though

    Not necessarily true.

Could be that the rubber isolator between the inner and outer stick is deteriorated enough to allow the inner stick to contact the outer stick causing NVH...
