    http://autos.yahoo.com/news/5-cars-you-might-as-well-buy-new-instead-of-used-205503884.html

In a nutshell, the Taco retains its value to a degree that there is little savings in buying a used one.

How little you'll save buying used: 16.5%

Again, used versions of this compact pickup truck sell for almost as much as new ones because of strong demand and tight supplies.

Lyman says used-car buyers snap up Tacomas partly because it's one of the only compact trucks on the market. As for supply, the model's durability -- coupled with a relatively small number of Tacomas coming off of leases right now -- means dealers have few used versions to sell.

And like other models on TrueCar's list, the Tacoma hasn't gotten a redesign in several years (eight, to be exact). So new versions have similar equipment and pricing to what used models do.

TrueCar found that 2013 Tacomas sell for $28,476 on average, only 16.5% more than the $23,782 you can expect to pay for the typical 2010 or 2011 version.

Yep. Went looking for used, but poor selection an high prices made buying new a no-brainer. It's worth the difference for the warranty, service and peace of mind knowing its true history.

Heck, I sold a '97 last year for 43% of its original cost new. Sold a '90 back in 2006 for 29% of its original cost new. I sold last year my 2000 Lexus GS300 and only got 21% of its original cost new.

I bought my '06 brand new, and kept it for 6-1/2 years. Now I have a '10 that I bought used. Used, because, well, try and find a DC Off Road with a 6 spd. figured I'd better snatch it up!

Same situation here. I was looking for a 09'-11' Sport in LB. Most trucks I saw were within 2-3k of the price of a new truck but with 30-50k miles and the wear and tear to show. It was a no brainer for me to buy new here and I NEVER buy new cars or trucks until now.

Just saw a good example of the value the Tacoma holds. 2009 DCSB 4x4 SR5 with 40k miles - $27,992 and it was reduced. Now I know the dealer most likely will not get that but who knows there are some fools out there.

We liked the Tacoma so much that we bought my wife a Highlander. It actually ended up being cheaper to buy brand new than it was to buy one that was a few years old once you totaled in the financing charges. We got 0.9% on the new one but the best they offered on used was 4%.

I got a preowned with and extended warranty of 100K at $23K. it had 37K on the clock and was clean as a whistle underneath, inside and the engine bay. If folks are getting 200K to 300K on a tacoma i am sure even if it was abused ill get at least 2/3 that. Most problems will show before 100K and my extended will cover that.

With the money i saved i got a motorbike some extras for the bike a digital camera setup and a large screen TV.

I like to think i got a good deal

I don't see used Tacomas priced all that well compared to what I keep reading here on TW. Than again, it may be the region I'm in, or the fact that they are about 10k more expensive new up here, giving them more room for more drastic depreciation. Idk.

I see DC 4x4 2nd gens for around $15-17k with 100k miles (160k km) quite often on local classifieds which is comparable to US unless I'm way off with my numbers and all I've wrote so far is irrelevant. My point is these would MSRP 30k+ new in US but closer to 40k in Canada.

To be fair though, they still seem to hold their value fairly well, and better than some other makes and models...

I originally started looking at used. After looking at a few that had 30-40k miles I bought a new one. The used ones around here are advertised as much as a new Taco, and the few I looked at didn't seem to be well maintained.

16% is 16%. on a $30k truck that's over $4.5k you could put towards mods.

Just to add my data point, looks like a 2013 optioned comprably to mine would be priced at ~$34-36k new around here. I got my 2010 for ~$24.5k out the door. 45k miles, bumper-to-bumper 100k mile warranty (albeit with a $100 deductable), new tires, up to date maintenance, excellent condition. That's "only" ~30% off new, but I'm pretty happy with that.

As a side benefit, since it's not "brand new" I'm not quite as worried about every little thing (food and drinks, a little dirt gets on it, etc.), which is good for my stress level since I have a 2 year old. I tend to be a bit OCD when I'm driving a brand new vehicle.

If I had reliability or repair cost concerns I'd probably worry about having the factory warranty over (even a good) 3rd party one. If there was some kind of factory-only option that I just had to have but no dealers ever got on their stock vehicles I'd consider a custom order on a new vehicle. Neither of these is the case with the Taco.

I think everyone should buy a new car at least once in their life just because buying your first new car is a pretty cool feeling. Once you're over that, I wouldn't spend the extra money without a good reason (even if it is "just" 16%).

Wait... saving 5k on a truck isn't a good idea?

Seems a lot of people aren't very good with money....
