Like the title says... I picked up my Ultra-Gauge a few weeks ago and decided to start calibrating it.

I filled my truck up on 5/24 to the neck of the filler tube and drove 410.3 miles on that tank with just about 1/8 of a tank left.

    20130605_101252_c71fdb99278efd8a0c2e154c3c7a76d2e1b3c3f6.jpg

Filled up at the exact same station and exact same pump and to the top of the filler neck.

Put 18.652 Gals of 93 Octane Shell V-Power in the tank with a total price of $68.06

Calculations for MPG = 410.3 miles / 18.652 Gals = 21.9976 MPG so lets just call it 22 MPG.

Ultra Gauge was calling 23.2 MPG which isn't bad considering this is the first tank run through it.

I can handle a variance of + / - 1 MPG but I expect it will get better the more tanks I run through it. All in all I'm pretty happy with the mileage and the Gauge itself.:)

*Edit* My wife drove the truck one day and she has, lets say, a little bit heavier foot than I do so I probably could have squeaked out another 1/2 MPG but I'm not complaining.

How is your ultra gauge mounted? I would like to do the same.
    Thanks

They offer a couple of different mounting options. They have a suction mount for the windshield but I have never had much luck with a suction mount so I bought the "Swivel" mount with the 3M tape on the back hoping it would mount up right where it is. It did and there is just the right amount of wire to hide it in the headliner, down the A-Pillar, and to the plug under the dash.

Yeah... I've heard you're not supposed to do it also.

But... I've "never" had any problems with doing it and it is the only accurate way to judge the mileage that you get. You know it is filled up the same every time.

Remember this when your evap canister goes bad.

Over the course of many fill-ups, the difference in the tank level becomes statistically zero. I would rather wait for that to happen than to overkill the tank for more accurate immediate results.

You may change your mind when you have to pay $365.00 for a new evap canister.

That is also what is causing the difference between the Ultragauge and your calculations. The scan gauge thinks you are putting in 21.X gallons and you are actually putting more into the tank.

And another thing, gasoline expands and contracts as the temperature rises and falls. The amount of energy contained in that variable-volume changes with the density. It would be more accurate to measure the fuel by weight instead of volume, and still more accurate to measure it in moles. The inherent inaccuracy in a miles-per-gallon number completely negates the value of filling the tank to the top of the filler neck.

Yup... regular unleaded at the cheaper stations is going for around $3.20 right now. I just use Shell V Power because of the test run on fifth gear a while back. I just run it because it makes me feel better and as long as I can afford it I'll use it.

Dam I wish I paid $3.64 for 93 or $3.20 for regular. In the Nazi state of California down here in LA/OC I'm paying $3.89 for 87 and $4.09 for 91. Lucky bastard :D

Bad thing is the station that I went too was one of the higher priced stations around. But I wanted to fill up at the same pump and when I started this I wasn't close to the house so I went with this one. The Shell that is closer to my house is about $3.25 for reg and $3.55 for 93. The Pilot that is on the freeway is $3.20 for reg noticed on the way home.
