    Hello everyone,

The Gear Oil is leaking from the Speedometer Gear which connects to the Transfer case of my 96 Tacoma SR5 V6 4x4. I replaced a part of the Speedometer Gear including the O-ring last week, but it's still leaking now. I need your help please. What should I do next? The picture below here looks clean but I just cleaned it and then took this pix only.

is it leaking where the cable goes into the tranny or is it from the entire assembly (where the gasket mating surface is)?

pull it back out, clean and dry it. put a generous coating of rtv on the o-ring and shove it back in. the rtv will help seal up any imperfections in the metal surface where the o-ring seals. while you have it out, make sure you didn't accidently damage the oring when installing it. get good rtv from a auto parts store. let it set overnight after this to ensure the rtv cures before driving.

I could be wrong but I noticed, it leaks from the entire assembly where the gasket mating surface is.

What kind of RTV do you recommend?

With RTV around the O-Ring, will it has a problem in the future in pulling the Gear out in case anything wrong with it. For instance, Speedometer or Speedometer cable?

If it's leaking out of either spot RTV should fix it.

Pull the cable out again and check the O-ring.

If there's any cracks or tears in it you should be able to find a replacement otherwise just seal it up with regular black gasket maker.

If it's on the mating surface check procedures for removing it, then pull it off, clean old gasket material off then follow the directions on the tube.

pretty easy stuff, just gotta make sure everything is clean before you put it back together and make sure not to stress it before it dries completely.

Thanks. I'll try to get it done and then report back here for you as soon as it gets the new paint from the paint shop on this coming weekend.

Are you sure it's not leaking from the output from the transfer case? You should clean the entire ass end of the TC and then determine where it's leaking. With all that spinning and wind the gear oil can travel all over the place.

I'll double check it again as soon as it comes home from the paint shop this coming weekend and then I'll let you know here.

Thank you so much. I used RTV and it seems the problem is fixed now. I'll drive it for couple more days and then I'll check it again. Again, thanks.
