Question about gear oil

I'm coming up on 30,000 miles and plan on driving my truck into the ground. Has anyone got experience and can confirm the quantities using 75w-140 (GL-5) for the following:

- Manual transmission: 1.9 qt
- Transfer case: 1.1 qt
- Front diff: 1.6 qt
- Rear diff: 3.0 qt

Total = 7.6 qt (or about 1.9 gallons)

I was just going to buy 2 gallons of Redline 75w-140 (to account for whatever i might spill) with some Amazon points i have left over. Is there anything i should be weary of?

Just wanting to learn as much as possible from the more knowledgeable folks on here. thanks in advance!

I can confirm all by the manual transmission. All the quantities were pretty close to what was specified. My manual said to use 80W-90 for the rear and

75W-90 for the front diff and x-fer case though. 140 weight is thick stuff, why are you going so heavy?

I'm sure you know this, but get the fill plugs out before you pull the drain plugs!

 

You're saying the 75w-140 is ok for the manual transmission? The way i understood it, 140 is better for a larger range of temperatures. If i understood wrong, i apologize and i'll stick to

75w-90, or do you think it's important to go with the 80w-90 for the rear?

No, I'm not saying anything about the manual transmission, I have an auto.

I was saying that the specified quantities for the x-fer case, front and rear diffs are pretty close (the quantities you listed are very close to what they actually take).

XW-140 is a heavy oil and can make your MPG's suffer. Unless you really plan on abusing your differentials, it's too heavy for normal use in my opinion and you do not need anything that heavy. I stuck with 80W-90 for the rear and

75W-90 for the front and transfer case and it's been doing great. I'm pushing 90k miles and have towed and hauled pretty heavily with mine.

 

+2, or 75W90, it takes a little over 3 qts.

Hey guys, so i finally finished up changing out all the oils. Rear and front diff were kinda dark but not too bad. Transmission and transfer case were pretty clean so i am happy.

However, i ran short of some Redline 75w90 GL-5 so if anyone has some left over in a bottle they didn't want to throw away and won't be using, please let me know and i'll pay for shipping.. just didn't want to spend another 20 bucks on a quart.

 

$20/quart? wow, that is pricy stuff...The top shelf Valvoline, Mobil, Citgo or other major brand of gear lube is normally about $75 for a five gallon pail or under $20 a GALLON. I would have to see some good data on why a such a super premium oil benefits such a light duty vehicle...Most folks I know who operate equipment in heavy duty applications, Iron Butt motorcycles, OTR Class 8 trucks, logging and construction equipment just stick with a major brand when available, and in a pinch, the FLAP house brand with the right GL5 certs.

Lots of folks on here recommend the Redline full synthetic. Either way i spent ~120 on oil because i'm saving a couple hundred dollars doing this myself instead of taking it to the dealer and wanted peace of mind. Truck drives like a dream now btw.. I know i got good oil so i'm not going to start over.. i literally need less than half a quart to finish.

 

Best of luck...I have a '11 Taco manual I am using Valvoline in, why don't we compare notes in 300k on oil cost and gear box/pumpkin rebuilds?

I bought one yesterday to top of my transmission.. i'm only a few ounces short so i might try drain some oil just to see how it looks after a few days driving..
