window regulator/motor install

first you unscrew the door handle


pop out the two circle covers



unscrew the two screws inside the door handle



pop out the plastic clips that hold the door panel to the door frame




slide the door handle to the inside of the cab to release it from the door frame



make sure to swing away the clear/white clip from the door latch lever attached to the door handle so you can release the lever/bar from the handle




release the rest of the door panel away from the door frame



if you are completely removing the door panel from the door frame be sure to remove the electrical connectors




remove the connector that connects the window motor to the switch



push the window down to unbolt the window from the regulator




i did this to help support the window when i removed the regulator bolts..



unscrew these 6 bolts to release the motor/regulator from the door frame



install is the reverse from disassemble..

I've got to do this to my passenger side sooner than later.

 

Looks like the factory part is discontinued. Anyone have an aftermarket brand and part number they recommend? Some of the non-OEM stuff is crap. 2000 Tacoma PreRunner xtra cab.

THANKS. I had my pax side replaced a year ago by some jack-leg mofo. It has rattled ever since, and I've resisted tearing into it. Now I have a pictorial guide.

 

So no suggestions on aftermarket brands for the regulator/motor assembly? Certainly someone has an opinion one way or the other.

 

Pretty sure we put in Dorman on my driver's side. It's been fine.

What happened to your service hole cover? The plastic water barrier of which there appears to only be the border covering the butyl adhesive. I would recommend you replace it as this is the primary water seal for the inside of your door.

$74 Dorman 741-799 Front Driver Side Power Window Regulator and Motor Assembly Compatible with Select Toyota Models

Dorman 741-799 replacement this weekend (driver's side). Fitment was perfect and it works like a champ.

 

I thought I had posted this last week but I guess something went wrong. Here is a PDF of the original write-up (at the beginning of this thread) that you can print and take outside when (if) you decide to remove the door panel.

Again, thanks to "banditstpk" for taking the time to photograph and document his procedure!

 

So I just replaced my kid's driver door regulator and motor and guess what? I'm kind of back to square one. The window just drags soooo slowly, and it sounds like tires squealing at a drag strip. I lubed the front and back channels while I had it apart and it worked great for 3 days. The lube (like most lubes lol) musta just worn off and is again letting very grippy rubber act upon the glass, slowing it down to a crawl. I'm thinking of replacing the front and rear channels and door panel belt weatherstrip to see if new, not-as-sticky, parts will help out. What's another $200 between friends?

 

Did you have to replace all that stuff to fix it? Did it fix it?

 

No. I actually found some silicone lube that worked very well. Lubed the front and rear channels and all is well.

 

Tip/Solution: *Coconut oil. Best ever!

For your windows and tracks you'll want a silicone based lube like guy mentioned above

 

Oh for sure, but for people (removing a stuck ring on a finger or something like that)-- coconut is the only way to go!

 

Hey, don't give us guys a tip about how to remove a ring on Saturday night.

You'll get us in all kinds of trouble for even having that knowledge!

 

This information was very helpful.
My drivers side window would quit working every once in a while. It would go down fine but it would stop going up.
When this happened I had to wait a few minutes and I could eventually get it to go up a little at a time.
I replaced the Toyota motor with a

$52 Dorman 742-600 Power Window Motor Compatible with Select Models, Black

Dorman 742-600. I reused the factory lift mechanism.
I did not like the fact that the Dorman motor did not have screw holes to attach it to the lift.
I guess the idea was that you would screw hard enough that it would create threads for the screws.
I guess this is because the Dorman product is a universal so they couldn't put in a specific thread pattern.
I also did not like the extra pigtail that was required to be used (blue wire in pic). It gets in the way so I had to tuck it in and tie it down.
Really not crazy about the Dorman design but it was what my local auto parts store had and it seems to work and the window goes up and down so much better now.
