First experience in Mud

Hello guys, I must say it was fun. I did get stuck a countless number of times. I'm running a pretty worn pair of falken rocky mountains ats's. With having 2 wheel drive I noticed the fastest ways I got stuck were when the traction control kicked in(are you supposed to hold the button for 5 seconds and override that before you offroad)it slowed me down and my truck just bogged. I do not have the e locker by the way. My friend in his 98 Grand Cherokee pulled me out several times. I believe his is all wheel drive.

Now when I did manage to unstick myself I noticed to keep the truck moving once I turned the traction control off I was almost bouncing off the rev limiter. Yet every time I relaxed the throttle to keep it away from red line I'd bog and not continue moving forward. Should I avoid this kind of action?

Now onto another question. My rear inner fender liners I guess got saturated in mud. Now one is hanging down onto the rear wheel the other is loose as well. Should I just take these off? How important are the liners. I guess I'll probably have to replace them if I don't cause I think the part with the clips ripped off.

Lessons learned today
1. 4 wheel drive is better then 2
2. To maximize 2 wheel potential invest in better tires then all terrain streets
3. Always have someone with you to pull you out.
4. ITS FUN AS HELL PLAYING IN MUD
5. I'm guessing a rear locker might help.
6. I figured as much shit talking as i hear about 2 wheel drive+mud=stopped at oriellys and picked up that tow strap smartest thing ever!!!

Any help of advice would be greatly appreciated.





Thats not just mud above the tire thats the inner fender hanging down. I tried to push it up no luck

Well your lessons learned were perfect. (especially #4) Either I or one of my friends all learned these our first time out. On the flipside, me and my buddy went mudding today and i had to pull his 2wd grand Cherokee out! not sure about your rpm issue tho. sub'd for more on that.

 

Well not an RPM issue but I was wandering if bouncing it off the rev limiter whilst trying to get out of shit will damage the engine.

 

You should not just do it all the time but its not going to hurt anything just cause you did it a few times that's what the rev limiter is for

Your Lessons that you've listed are perfect. And I will emphasize, the necessity to DO NOT GO OFFROAD ALONE. Getting stuck is only part of the issue. If you experience a personal injury of any kind that limits your ability to walk and/or call for help, you are screwed.

I will also add.. Do not go into mud holes without checking its depth. If you can't verify the depth of a mud hole - do not cross it. Bad things can happen when you drive into the unknown.

Lastly...If you do drive into a deep mud hole and the truck stalls....DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT TURN THAT KEY. Never try to start the truck if you're in a deep mud hole and the truck stalls. If you do, bad things will happen.
BTW - We told that guy (in above photo) NOT to go in there. He didn't listen and went in there anyway..... truck stalled, he cranked it over, bent a rod, and totaled his truck.

 

My next goal is to replace those tires. I don't see mud often at all. So I think a all terrain might be better for my area. Do you guys think I should pull out my rear plastic or just get new plastic pieces and pop them back in.

You WANT those fender liners, I ran for a long time without em, fuck that... keep them, fix them, just make sure you have em

Also, I guess we've all gone through the mud phase but... I really avoid mud when I can.

You'll tear shit up and it's a huge pain in the ass to clean. You'll be cleaning mud out from under your truck for the next 3 months.

 

Also, looks like your tow strap has a hook on it. Not a smart thing to have.

This is my first truck so I'm a bit new at the off roding thing. Why should you not use a strap with a hook on it? Yayou're right about that it super sticky mud and a pain in the ass to clean. I sprayed of my front wheels and suspension components now it drives a lot smoother. it got a lot hotter today so the mud dried out and fell off the rear inner fender plastic. they kind of went back to where they were now I just have to get some new push pins things you know the black pins that body panels are attached with.

 

its always more fun offroading in a 2wd because getting stuck is all of the fun

 

From the concern your attachment point fails or your hook slips off and now you've got a missile flying through the air with a lot of speed and energy. Pretty deadly if it hits someone in the head. Similar to how you should never use a tow ball to yank from -- they can go flying as well. You want the strap with loops.

 

Yeah get rid of that TOW strap and get a SNATCH strap and 2 or 4 D ring shackles. I have 2 plus one that fits in my receiver hitch. This snatch strap is designed to give a little bit of stretch and uses that kinetic energy to recover the stuck vehicle.

tow straps and snatch straps both have their place in off road recovery. it's best to have both. sometimnes the stretch of the snatch strap is a hindrance, potentially causing more danger.

OP, if you continue to use the strap with the hooks until you can get a strap with looped ends, attach the hooks with the opening up. that way, if a hook were to break or stretch, it will be shot down into the ground, and not flying through the air. still extremely dangerous, but a little better than with the opening down. same goes for when using the hook on the end of a winch line.

The only wheeling around my house is mud. I've got to the point to where I don't even take my truck into the woods unless I have to because I hate having to spend hours on end cleaning the bastard. Also, mud has caused quite a few things to go wrong on my truck. I have to be in a very very special mood to want to go mud riding in my truck and trust me, that isn't often.

 

Ya it was fun but more of a pain I'm the ass now that I finished cleaning it. I definitely enjoy just trailing. And your right allot of plastic shit broke.

 

The last time I got my truck all muddy I spent $15.00 at the car wash with a pressure washer blasting it off. Even six months later I was still finding dried up dirt clods on the frame in hard to reach places. Now I will not go wheeling in the mud unless I have to and when I am in the mud I try not to make a mess.
