Is this normal? I have a 2013 sport that I bought late March of this year. I only took the drivers side tires off. I was trying plati dip out. Only one lug nut was rusted. This seems a little early for things to start rusting.

No need to worry about it. My '08 has had it for as long I can remember. I just hit with a wire brush and maybe some rustoleum or the like. Never had any on the lugnuts, though...

Put some neverseize on the back of the wheel where it contacts the hub, it will help prevent the wheel from seizing to the hub. If the rust itself bothers you, take it off, clean it and rattle can it (use high temp paint).

Ok...thanks. I may clean it up some, but I'll be watching this. Not sure if my 06 4runner has any rust on the hub.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
It's steel, and it's uncoated. Steel rusts. The speed at which it rusts depends on the composition of the steel and environmental conditions, but all steel will eventually rust. Some of the steel I work with will pick up surface rust in a matter of an hour, just sitting on the work bench.

I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised that steel rusts. What is a little surprising is the rust on the lug nut itself, since it is coated (chrome, I'm supposing). Usually chrome doesn't rust through that quick, since it has protective layers of copper/nickel and chromium between atmosphere and the underlying steel.

Do you live near, or drive through, salt water?

Are you getting into any salt water? That will do it.

That's a lot of rust already. Think of how it would look a couple years from now. I hate rust.

No salt water in Arkansas. I just thought it was a little early for this, but according to others I guess not.
