Could be the tensioner pulley for the A/C.. or it could the be timing idler pulley(s)... those you do not want to fuck with, just replace 'em.

 Ok then...whatever you want to believe. I work on machinery for a living - and I know what a tensioner is and bearings & such. I did this work myself many many years ago and I don't own the truck anymore.

I did go to a bearing shop (Brown Bearing). Gave them the old bearing and told them what I needed it for. So - perhaps the doofus at the counter gave me the wrong bearing for the application. I pressed it in and it oozed & squeeled. I bought an OEM unit after that.

no need to get your panties in a knot. I was just asking what that bolt was because it looks just like the adjustor bolt on the newer 3.4s.

I have to agree with quattrokiwi...that 5 o clock bolt he mentions is the same one that relieves the tension on my a/c belt....AFTER you loosen the bolt in the tensioner pulley itself.

    Help!

    I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma truck 4 cylinders - Automatic transamission

I need to replace the Upper Pulley, Front of the radiator (not the bottom one, close to the engine block)

but behind the pulley there is a long bolt, kind like in a small metal frame box, just don't know if is that what will loosen the tension of the belt, (which I already remove and nothing happend to the belt)

or just have to remove the bolt that is in the center of the Pulley?
(wich I already try and it is hard to remove with the tension belt on, bolt starting to get worn out, so I stop)

What or How will lose the tension of the belt and how to remove bolt of the pulley?

    Thanks, I appreciate your comments!

Which belt are you trying to loosen? The upper pulley may be the PS pump pully?..

The Ac idler pulley was 6301 I believe (bearing p/n)

Do you have the pieces of the bolt?
Go to your local hardware store and pluck around at the nuts to find out what thread/size it is. If you can measure the broken one or someone here can measure theirs..... to get the length.

If its a specialty size...might need to order it online like McMaster Carr.

Do you have to buy a new belt when you replace idler bearing? and do you use sealed bearings or the plastic covered ones?

I will help revive it again. Not all tensioner pulleys are easily serviced by means of inserting another bearing. The later ones have a metal plate over the bearing.

Was the whine you got similar to the sound of a power steering pump failing? Mine sounds like a bad power steering pump but the noise doesn’t change when I turn, and I used an automotive stethoscope and am pretty sure it’s the bottom pulley. I just want to make sure I am correct before I replace it or the bearing. Might just replace the whole pulley, the one on it is pretty rusty.

Trying to keep it in shape and running nicely.
I don't know if I should buy another tensioner and idler pulley that looks just like the one on it or buy one that is sealed and red.

would this part(s) going bad in any way send a sharp rattle into the passenger side of the cab
it only seems to happen after the A/C has been on for awhile then turned off while still driving
then whenever I accelerate there is some annoying rattle coming from passenger side,
I suppose the 2 silverish tubes coming through from the engine compartment go somewhere
... don't know beans about this A/C stuff

Yes, I am replacing all pulleys I see that some are sealed red/green in color and some have the O-Ring on it as the original one have.

I wanted to know if one store brand is better then the other. I think I am going to go with the sealed pulleys.
