Went to look under the truck because I'm getting a weird vibration between 20-30 while accelerating and decelerating... I have a feeling this is worse than I had originally thought. Bought this truck from the dealer a little over a year ago.

so is there any love out there for the 2005+ taco owners? or should I prepare my anus?

My 2006 from VT looked like that when I traded it in @ Acton in Mass.
    Your truck looks white.
Mine was Impulse Red someone in Mass is now driving around though.
It needs a wire brush & some POR15.

9 Damn that sucks! I suppose it'll only be a matter of time before a 10, when you'll be able to punch a hole through it.

The rust looks bad but mostly superficial. It doesn't look like the metal itself is seriously corroding away in any of the pictures. The bad part is, the coating is almost completely gone so, unless you do something about it soon, it's just going to get a whole lot worse in a hurry. I'd get after it now while the frame is at least still structurally sound, especially if you plan on keeping the truck for a while. My 2007 isn't quite as bad as yours, but it's at the point where it needs some attention and I will repaint the frame before winter comes.

You can try, but don't hold your breathe. There aren't any recalls or TSB's out for the rust on the 2nd Gens yet so you will most likely be on your own.

For that... you are on your own. I repainted my frame and so far had held up pretty good. I would say wirebrush and paint with some industrial paint.

I was thinking of getting one of those mini sandblasters from harborfreight and going to town. is POR15 the best thing to use right now or are there better over the counter options

POR15 is great stuff but you have to do the prep correctly! It is expensive and time consuming but if you plan to keep the truck, the results are worth it. Again though, take your time with the prep!! If you don't prep it properly, it'll start flaking in a year, ask me how I know...

Yeah its bad, but the majority of it looks to be on the surface. Get it cleaned up and then cover it with some rust blocking paint.

Holy crap!! I'd call that a 10, but y'all probably see rust like that all the time up north, with all the salt on the roads up there. I'm from Virginia. My truck hardly has any rust under it, and it's a '96. Was your truck ever undercoated? Maybe before you got it, the truck had lived in a more southern state and thus had no undercoating. Because I would think that a greater proportion of Yanks undercoat their trucks than us Southrons, because of the weather differences.

It's a great answer but certainly not your only option. There are plenty of paints and coatings that will work. The correct answer is, you are at the point where you need to do something. Even wire brushing, priming and rattle can paint would work, it just wouldn't be very durable in the long run. There are a lot of products you could use, Eastwood supposedly makes good stuff for example or Fluid Film (wouldn't recommend this for you, I think you need something more permanent).

Where do you live? OP lives in the upper north east, I live in the midwest, tons of salt on the roads around here and there I'm sure. The 1st gens around here are no better than anything else.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was another buy back. We're approaching that 10 year mark with the 2005's and it appears Toyota hasn't learned their lesson about using adequate frame coatings. If the OP doesn't do anything, I could see that being a very big problem in 2 - 3 years which, I would think, would force Toyota to do something.

I don't see any buy backs for 2nd gens. IIRC the only reason they did buy backs on the 95.5-2000 models is because they no longer had the frame diagrams or something to that matter so they couldn't produce any more? 01-04 got frame replacements, and that is what I am assuming they will do with 05+ models.

So far I have only seen the one thread that an 05 got frame replaced but he had to fight a long time to get it.

I dont understand why toyota doesnt step up now and start coating frames on existing trucks before they get that bad. Wouldn't that be cheaper than replacing the frames 5 years later?

Thats what mine looked like before i started treating it. i bought mine up near the great lakes so it had a ton of salt exposure. i took mine to Toyota twice to get their comment on it, the second trip they made a note in their system so they are aware of the situation. i'd take it to Toyota so they can get it in their system. so this way, if an issue should happen or another buy back or whatever happens, its documented that you were concerned about it. after it is documented, id POR 15 or use another rust treatment on it. I used Eastwood products on mine just a few weeks ago as well as an internal frame coating. we'll see how it holds up, i imagine i'll need to topcoat again by this time next year.
