Ok so I know it seems like everyone running 285's are either running 4.5 or less back spacing or wheels spacers. I have a set of 2012 factory fj wheels or 4runner trail wheels. I think there 17x7.5 and a back spacing of like 4.9 feel free to correct me. Can I run 285's with out problems. Here's some background I have a 2011 dcsb with 3" toytec lift and light racing ucas. I run 265/70/17 right now and want to go bigger but dont really wanna switch wheels or run wheel spacers I like these ones. Thanks for any help a7aganan_1007e3b61bb05d9dfe74c23e65bde9ce758818c6.jpg

I'm pretty sure the backspacing is 4.75 on those wheels. You will have to trim plastic on the fender well and do a cab mount chop most likely because you will have some rubbing issues. There is an abundance of information on this site regarding your specific question, so grab some coffee, sit back, and read a ton.

I know about trimming the cab mount an some plastic but was wondering if it would hit my uca due to not being 4.5 back spacing

You will most likely need 1/4 inch spacers to clear those UCA's at full lock.

Yea the consensus is 4.5" of BS is needed to clear the UCA's from my understanding.

what about a 285/65/17 tire?? just a bit wider but not really taller. Yokohoma makes that size. about the only tire maker that does.

My guess is yes, at full lock you will rub the UCA's with 4.75" BS. the UCA's only assist with caster and alignment, they won't give you much width clearance. That's why I say to be safe, you need at least a 1/4" spacer to clear the 285's from the UCA's. If you are going for pure aesthetics and don't wheel any, you might could get away with it. Also I don't think 1/4" spacers would stress your wheel bearings much at all. Just get hub centric from Bora or Spidertrax.

I would recommend a 255/80/17 BFG KM2 with those wheels, no spacers, if indeed you wheel a lot.

If you get different wheels, just get a 4.5" BS, doesn't matter the wheel size, I.e. 16, 17, 18. A 285 is still 11.22" in width.

Functionally the 255's outperform the 285's in every way except 12"-36" of deep snow. If performance isn't your main priority and aesthetics are, I would A: sell your current wheels for wheels that have 4.5" of BS or B: get a 1/4" spacer and run your current wheels.

Anything below your frame, the narrower 255's outperform the 285's.
