    Never even heard of them.

(FYI, I don't listen to music radio, and I don't have cable. I hate commercials and am cheap)

Ahh, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

Some of the more 'mainstream' references frequently whizz by my head unrecognized. I'm used to it, but it catches others off guard at times.

it is certainly underpowered. And there is no excuse for the terrible gas mileage with the engine size.

Lack of torque is my only complaint! (2010 TRD OR 4.0V6 6-speed manual)

That can of course be cured with a regear. Just have not had a chance to.

There is a reason why the Tacoma has the best stopping distance in it's segment, they could use disk brakes no problem, but that would cause brake warpage issues, early wear problems and decreased stopping distance.

    Underpowered in what sense?

Ive been in a 650hp/1300 # torque 1 ton dodge Cummins for the past 10 years so its a huge change for me, LOL. But Im learning to drive the truck and I find myself driving easier and much slower than I have in years, that's a good thing. It didn't matter how I drove that truck or what it towed it got 19-20 mpg. This 4L engine seems super touchy as far as millage so Im taking it easy and not getting in a hurry.

One question though, I noticed ours is like 235hp but the 4L in the Tundra is rated at 270hp, whats the diff. in the engines? Any ways its just elect. tuning diff.?

The v8 just sounds louder but not necessarily have more power to weight ratio you feel like you have more power but you actually didn't go faster. You can just put in aftermarket headers and exhaust if the noise helps. I personally like a quite performance muffler on the truck and I raced my taco against a v6 camry it's close...it lost but not that much heh

    Same as the FJ.
The Tundra gets different heads and dual VVTi.

More correctly, peak torque is too high RPM.

The 2.7 has plenty of power, it just doesn't make it until it gets above 3k.
Unfortunately, the trans programming and gearing will only put you at 3k when you're on the floor passing someone or climbing a grade.

3000 to 4500 is the 2.7 sweet spot. I rarely get mine above 2500.

I've had a pretty good dose of Scotch tonight so here's my answer.

I almost did not buy the Tacoma because of the engine performance. I'm not used to having to dog a vehicle like I do to pass a car on a two lane. My other car is a Porsche 911 with a NA 3.6 with 345 Hp so I am spoiled a bit.

I cannot figure out why Toyota can only get 236 out of 4.0 liters. It should put out 300 HP easy, or if it's only going to get 236 HP, then why not better MPG? My full size Silverado 4x4 with a 5.3 V8 gets close to 21 on the highway.

I am getting just a bit better city with the Tacoma (about 16 MPG) and the Silverado got about 15 MPG City. But on the highway, they both get close to the same.

I didn't have to dog the Silverado as much as the Taco, especially towing or passing.

I'm considering the SuperCharger. I'd like to drive one that has one installed before I spend 5K+ but I'm not hopeful.

Bottom line is I'm not thrilled with the performance, I do however appreciate the level of reliability and that is why I bought a Tacoma.

So you really want a hybrid or pure electric :p
